SQC - The acronym will appear many times over the course of the next year in articles. SQC is short for Sesquicentennial, which will be the 150th year celebration June 10-14, 2020 in Appleton City.  Preparation has already begun. It will take the entire community to make it happen like in the past town celebrations. The core committee hopes everyone will become involved, which includes the simplest things, like being in the audiences, attending the events and wearing period dress or tee shirts that have Appleton City on them. But, there is so much work, that volunteers are needed to come forward. They have asked people whose talent may be recognized from past service but there are so many others that have talents we do not know about.  Please let the committee know your abilities. 57 areas have been identified that need committee members. They will entertain suggestions, but they need to know ideas now to see if will work into the schedule. They know some people are last minute to everything, but that really doesn't make it easy for those trying to get everything in place. This SQC is a celebration of what has happen in the past to the Appleton City area, so think historical for this celebration...generic activities can take place any year. Step forward with what you'd like to be involved doing during the event. Farmers dealing with flooding in Missouri can find reliable, up-to-date information on many flood-related topics from University of Missouri Extension at extension.missouri.edu. Specialists in MU Extension have assembled information on flooded fields, crops, forages, livestock and property, as well as information on how to navigate an array of government agencies and entities prepared to help producers during and after flooding. Online resources include helpful news and articles, downloadable publications, contact information for extension field specialists, and an extensive collection of answers to frequently asked questions related to livestock, field crops, horticulture, soil and more.  While the rain and its aftermath will require some time for healing to occur, the decisions we make today will determine how pervasive the effects will be over time. From ensuring a safe water supply to filing insurance claims, all the decisions to make can seem overwhelming. But through MU Extension’s online resources and county-based specialists, we can help those affected make informed decisions that provide a firmer footing on the road to recovery. To access the flood resources page directly, go to extension2.missouri.edu/programs/flood-resources. The MU Extension Community Emergency Management Program (CEMP) provides education and technical assistance to individuals, families, local governments, schools and organizations in preparing for and responding to natural and man-made disasters. Regardless of size or impact, all disasters are local events. MU Extension is a key resource for the public, emergency services and public officials because of the unique relationship it maintains with each community. CEMP is a central point for MU Extension emergency management functions, including mitigation programs, preparedness activities and recovery issues. Native grasses can be useful when grazing your cattle through the summer months.  Native grasses provide adequate forage quality and quantity for stocker cattle to gain approximately 2 lbs. daily.  In addition, these grasses grow more efficiently during the summer months on less water and fertility resulting in higher stocking rates and better performance than typically grazed cool season grasses.  Also moving cattle to native grass pastures during the summer reduces the consumption of ergovaline, which is associated with fescue toxicosis symptoms, resulting in healthier better performing cattle. Since native grasses are beneficial to cattle grazing during the summer, MU Extension is cooperating with NRCS, Missouri Department of Conservation, and Quails Forever to provide a pasture tour to learn more about cattle grazing native grasses. This Partners in Pasture tour will be held on July 24 at the Wah’Kon-Tah Prairie near El Dorado Springs, Mo. beginning at 5:30 p.m. People from each of the partnering organizations will be available to provide discussion and answer questions related to grazing native grasses.  Topics of discussion will include:
Patch burn grazing as a forage management tool for cattle and wildlife on Wah’Kon-Tah Prairie and Practical cattle grazing management and performance on native pastures. As part of the tour, there will be a potluck meal, so bring you favorite dish.  Missouri Department of Conservation will provide hamburgers for the tour. The tour is free to the public but please register by July 18 by contacting the Cedar County MU Extension Center at 417-276-3313 or Patrick Davis by email at davismp@missouri.edu. For more information or if you need accommodations because of a disability, need to relay emergency medical information or need special arrangements if the building is evacuated contact the Cedar County MU Extension Center.  You may also find more information on how to improve your grasslands at https://extension2.missouri.edu/programs/nrcs-mu-grasslands-project.
