Editorial: End the spam calls NOW

It affects most everyone- unwanted calls from someone trying to sell you an extended warranty, insurance or even scam you. The call can cost YOU in terms of time and data usage.

We all thought we were safe with the national do-not-call list. But now "spoofing", by altering the caller ID, spammers can call you but you can't call back which makes it quite difficult to report them. Yes, they are breaking the law and fines begin at $40,000 per violation.

Sure, you can block the number. But next time they'll use another number. Sure, you can wait and hit '2' to get taken off their call list (uh, right). Sure, if you're in a playful mood, stay on the line and waste their time too...

And ultimately you can simply not answer the call. But if you're a business owner or have something posted on Craigslist, you're inclined to answer unknown numbers.

When these spammers call, answering on your mobile phone costs you. Maybe just a minute on that one, but if you get several a week, it adds up.

Make no mistake the technology is already in place to track down these so called (no pun intended) companies. Even though they've modified the caller ID, the pertinent information is available with a little high tech sleuthing.

Making this information publicly available so these companies can be held accountable will literally take an act of congress. We highly recommend contacting your local State Representatives, Senators, Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General. Then, if you're really feeling froggy, jump to the national level as well.
