The family, for financial reasons moved to Charleston, SC in the late 1930’s so that both of his parents could work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Lyman loved the heat and humidity of Charleston, but it never felt like home to him. With steady employment the family was able to regain their financial footing and when asked what the now teenaged Lyman would most like to do he replied that he would like to return to Moundville and finish his High School education with his friends he so fondly remembered.
The family decided that Mom and son would return to Moundville and Roscoe would stay behind to work a little while longer in the Shipyards. The family purchased their home in Moundville and Roscoe soon returned to join them. Lyman was able to complete his High School years at Moundville and later attended Fort Scott Community College.
He married Bonnie Jean Rogers in early 1957 and had a young daughter, Julie, with their son Craig coming soon after. It was about this time that Lyman purchased an old Phillips 66 Gas Station. Through hard work the business thrived, and two more children were added to the family, Wendy and Warren. When Highway 43, once running through the middle of town moved to bypass it, Lyman saw no other alternative, but to move right along with it. It was on or about 1969 that the Station that exists to this day, right along 43 Highway, was built along with the home that sits just North of it. The station was supplemented by a successful used car business.
He was a kind, gentle man that loved people and the community he lived in. Never having a bad word to say about anyone, he didn’t really ever seem to mind too much when the phone rang on Thanksgiving or Christmas, just as we were sitting down for dinner, with someone needing a little something, a flat tire fixed, pulled out of a ditch, just a little bit of gas, or even a pack of cigarettes.
Bonnie passed on May 1, 2012. Lyman took her passing very hard and never stopped saying how much he missed our Mother, and her cooking. He just didn’t know where she learned to cook so well. They were partners in life, not always perfect, but each making the other a little bit better and true role models for their children.
Lyman loved and was loved deeply by his 4 children, Julie (Dr. Robert Wood), Craig (Patricia Bott), Wendy (Mark Wolfe) & Warren (Cathy Bott), 9 grandchildren, Candace, Lacey, Mitchell, Cameron, Cody, Parker, Kyle, Gracie & Luke, 6 great-grandchildren, Eli, Gavin, Olivia, Gabby, Ellie & Emma.
We will miss you Dad with all our hearts, but we will remember the happy lives you created for us, your fun sense of humor, always loving a good joke, your unequaled work ethic, and the twinkle in your eyes of your oh so incredible vision.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Moundville Cemetery in Moundville, MO with Phillip Owens officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
