Obituary - Ollie Burnett (O.B.) Roberts

The funeral service for O.B. will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri with Elder Rhoda Hoover and Evangelist Dave Quick officiating.

Visitation will preceded the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Appleton City Cemetery, Appleton City, Missouri.

The family suggests any memorial donations be made to Heartland Hospice. They were so kind to our family and took such great care of O.B.
Ollie Burnett (O.B.) Roberts, age 82, was born on May 26, 1937, in Appleton City, Missouri to Oscar Burnett and Willa Morgan (Ward) Roberts. O.B. departed this life at his home surrounded by his family on May 29, 2019.

Faith, family, and farming were O.B.’s passions in life. He was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church where he served as a deacon since November 1978. O.B. met Regina Gurley on a blind date set up by their friends Phyllis Bracher and Dane Schellman. It proved to be a great match, and the pair was married on July 1, 1960. To this union two sons were born, Craig and Kevin. O.B. started farming with his father and took over the family farm after his father’s passing. O.B. was proud that his farm has been recognized as a Missouri Centennial Farm and has been owned by the Roberts family since 1870. Through his years in farming, he raised cattle, hogs, and row crops. There were bountiful years and there were very trying years on the farm, but his passion for farming prevailed through the years. O.B.’s pets played an important role in his life. He always had a dog by his side while doing chores around the farm with his current dog, Toby, being his favorite. Everywhere O.B. went, Toby was not far behind. Toby was also with O.B. every day during therapy helping to lift each other’s spirits.

O.B. loved to travel and he and Regina were fortunate enough to take many amazing trips. Among his favorites were an Alaskan cruise, the Holy Land and Jordan, Disney Land with his great-granddaughter and his last trip to Greece. Unfortunately, while vacationing in Greece in October 2018, O.B suffered a massive stroke. After several weeks in a Greek hospital, O.B. was able to return to the States for additional treatment and subsequent rehabilitation. He worked very hard at his therapy and was determined to get better, shocking all the therapists at how strong he was! O.B. loved spending time outdoors and on the day of his stroke, he climbed a mountain, in the rain, on the Greek island of Rhodes. O.B. was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Wright Piepmeier.

O.B. is survived by his wife of 58 years, Regina, of Appleton City; son, Craig, and wife Tina of Appleton City; son, Kevin and wife Alison of Lee’s Summit; sister, Maxine Roberts Piepmeier of John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit; granddaughter, Ashlyn and husband Mitchell Turner of Rockville; grandson, Brett Roberts of Appleton City; and great-granddaughter, Brealea Ann Turner of Rockville.

We want to say a special thanks to Penny Foster Knight and Tim Miller for helping to take such great care of O.B. Their compassion and kindness were much appreciated.

Nice end to the work week

It’s going to be another nice day out there as we bring the work week to a close, but there are some more storms in our forecast for the weekend that you should plan for. Expect temperatures to warm a bit today and Saturday ahead of a cold front that will sweep across the region Saturday afternoon and evening.

And, as the cold front sweeps through Saturday, this will bring a threat of showers and thunderstorms with it. Otherwise, expect a pleasant end to the weekend as cooler, drier, air filters in across the region behind Saturday’s front.

From the office of: Richard M. Shields Prosecuting Attorney Henry County

The man who helped accused cop killer Ian McCarthy was given Probation by Jackson County judge.

On August 7, 2017, Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael was brutally gunned down in the line of duty after making a traffic stop.

Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Richard Shields has charged Ian McCarthy with murder in the first degree in Officer Michael’s death. He is set for trial early next year and the State is seeking the death penalty in that case.

Prosecutor Shields charged others with assisting McCarthy after the shooting, including William G. Noble of Clinton. He was charged with fraudulent purchase of a firearm, hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence and three counts of endangering the welfare of his children.

Mr. Noble agreed that if the State would dismiss the endangering welfare of a child charges, he would plead guilty to the other charges with no agreement as to a sentence.

On March 21, 2019 Noble admitted under oath that about two years before the murder of Officer Michael, he purchased an AR-15 assault rifle for Ian McCarthy, knowing that McCarthy could not purchase the rifle for himself because of his status as a convicted felon. He also admitted that after McCarthy murdered Officer Michael, he hid McCarthy out in his home in Clinton and then a short time later disposed of the murder weapon by throwing it into a strip pit near Clinton.

Noble had requested a change of judge and change of venue which was granted. The case was assigned to Judge Kevin Harrell in Jackson County. On May 30 a sentencing hearing was held before Judge Harrell. Prosecutor Shields urged the judge to sentenced Nobel to the maximum terms of 4 years each to be served consecutively for a total of 12 years. Shields cited the thousands of man-hours spent by several law enforcement agencies searching for McCarthy in and around Clinton while Noble gave him quarter and then lied to officers repeatedly about his knowledge.

Prosecutor Shields explained to the judge that Noble knew McCarthy had been convicted of violent felonies in another state, but purchased an assault rifle for him anyway. It was also noted that Noble put his own children in danger by hiding the cop killer in his home with his children present and then threw the evidence into a strip pit.

Despite the pleas of the prosecutor to the judge to punish Noble for his role in helping McCarthy, Judge Harrell gave Noble the lowest possible outcome, giving him a suspended imposition of sentence with only three years of probation. With earned compliance credits, Noble could be on probation for just a year and a half and not have a record of a conviction. Prosecutor Shields said he had hoped that Noble would have much more accountability and was deeply disappointed in the outcome and was puzzled by it.

He recalled that Jacob Johnson, who had pleaded guilty several months ago to a single charge for giving McCarthy a ride out of town received the maximum sentence by a Pettis County judge for his role.

Prosecutor Shields noted that several of Officer Michael’s family members and brother police officers from Clinton PD and several other agencies were present for the sentencing. They were similarly disappointed.

Boaters: Avoid Boating On Flooded Waterways!

MSHP Captain Matt Walz, director of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division, is encouraging boaters to avoid flooded areas where boating traffic may negatively impact community flood damage prevention efforts. Many communities are working to prevent additional flood damage from occurring and unnecessary boating traffic in these areas can adversely affect those efforts.

The Missouri and Mississippi rivers and the many associated tributaries to those rivers are experiencing major flooding, so those waterways are particularly vulnerable to additional damage. Avoid any unnecessary boat operation in these areas.

Please do your part in minimizing the impact flood waters are having on our communities. Avoid boating on flooded waterways.
