The ACHS Junior Class will serve biscuits & gravy and pancakes 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8 at the Park Building. Proceeds will be used to help fund the ACHS Prom All Nighter activities.
The monthly Men’s Fellowship Breakfast at the Appleton City Church of God (Holiness) will be 7:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8. All the men of the community are invited to join them for a time of great food and fellowship. Ron Dunlap will have a short devotional.
The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, February 9 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up. A free will donation will be greatly appreciated
Montrose VFW Post 8820 will host a Coyote Tournament February 8-9, 2020. Registration is February 7 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Montrose VFW. There will be $100 entry fee per team (3 man team is max). There will also be a $5 side pot for the mangiest dog. Coyotes may be taken by all legal methods as determined by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Check in is Sunday, February 9 at 3:00 p.m. (If you are late you will not be counted). There will be cash payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd laces and the biggest dog. All participants will be entered to win a Mossberg 590 shotgun (all state laws apply). St. Clair County Cattlemen’s meeting will be 6:30 p.m. February 11 at Lakeland High School FFA. Sponsors are MFA and Ashgrove Aggregates. The speaker will be Pat Miller, University Extension, on How Soil pH and Fertility Affect Weed Numbers and How to Control with Herbicides.
The ACHS basketball games against Drexel and the Pink Night activities are rescheduled to Thursday, February 6 at the same times.

Appleton City Masonic Lodge #412 will have its annual spring pancake and sausage breakfast Sunday February 16 from 6:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The meal is all you can eat for $5.00. Children under 6 eat for free. The proceeds go toward their senior scholarship fund and building upkeep.

The Parents & Friends of the Appleton City FFA would like to invite you to their Annual Labor Auction on February 22 in the high school gym. The evening will begin with a buyer’s dinner at 6:00 p.m. served by Kickin' Chicken, with the live auction starting at 7:00 p.m. As part of this event, they will also have a silent auction which will be setup along the south wall of the high school gym beginning at 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. that night.
Appleton City Elementary PTO will be hosting the 3rd Annual Little Ladies Dance Saturday, February 15 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the elementary gym. This dance is for all little ladies pre-K through 5th grade in our community and the special guy in their life (dad, grandpa, uncle, family friend, etc.) to come out for a night of dancing, snacks, pictures and overall good fun. Tickets are $20 for a couple (add $5 per additional sibling attending). No RSVP is needed and tickets will be purchased at the door the night of the dance. They usually are sent weekly. Miller covers Bates, Cass, Jackson, St. Clair and Vernon counties. Ag producers who need to obtain or renew a private pesticide applicator license can attend one of the following training sessions provided through University of Missouri Extension. This class also completes the EPA worker protection training program for ag employees who handle pesticides. Producers will be required to purchase an M87 manual for $12 unless they bring a 2007 M87 with them. Please call in reservations to your local County Extension Center or register with the link for the class one week prior. Sometimes you end up with pasture land that has been abused and neglected. Maybe you’ve rented it, bought it or inherited it. Now where do you start? First, take a walk across the pasture to assess what you have. While you’re at it, take a soil test, because there’s a good chance that it is low in several things. Take a close look at what is growing out there. You may think that there is no good grass out there but a close, hands-and-knees look may show you that there are actually tiny, stunted fescue plants there. The pH and/or fertility may be so low that they just aren’t growing. Maybe there aren’t any desirable forages out there and you do need to think about drilling in some grass. Overseeding with legumes helps improve the forage quality and reduces fescue endophyte problems. If the pH and fertility are low, lespedeza would be preferred to clovers till you can get things corrected. While you’re walking, look at the weed situation. Broomsedge, also called poverty grass, is an opportunist. You can recognize it by the one to two-foot tall orangey-tan seed stalks. In the early spring you might find a short grass with soft, very fuzzy leaves. This is downy brome, another low quality grass. You can recognize it in early summer by its foot-tall seed stalks with fluffy seed heads. If the good forages are absent or stunted, these weeds will come in. Improving pH and fertility and planting desirable forages, if needed, will get rid of them over time as they outcompete them. Annual weeds such as ragweed, pigweed and croton are easily killed if sprayed with 2,4-D when they are small but the best approach is to thicken the forage stand so they don’t germinate. Many biennials, such as the thistles, are easily killed if sprayed while they are in the rosette stage. Perennial weeds such as horse nettle may be more difficult as are the woody or brushy weeds like blackberries, sericea lespedeza and multiflora rose. Blackberries and sericea lespedeza will require several treatments over a number of years. Sprays for all these broadleaf weeds will also control desirable legumes. So overseeding with legumes may have to wait until the weeds are under control. It may be possible to spot spray areas with bad weed problems or work on part of the field at a time. That way you don’t take out all the legumes at one time. So work on pH and fertility; add forages, if needed, and control the weeds, if needed. Good pH and fertility will stimulate a healthy, thick stand of grass and legumes and that will go a long way toward eliminating or weakening weeds.

Preregistration will be 7:00 p.m. at stage with the contest at 7:30 p.m. Age groups will be: Children 0-10, Children 10-18, Men and Women over 18 and Groups. 1st - 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each category.
Once again DbarJ Quilts Etc will be sponsoring the Elva Gwinn Huffman Essay Contest for non-profit groups. Any non-profit group can write an
essay about their group, their good works, how they would use the quilt to help them raise money for their cause. It is best if you keep it to no more than 2 pages. Due date for the essays in March 31, 2020. They will be read and the quilt will be given out on April 2, which is Elva's birthday.
