From the Cass County Health Clinic

We have received numerous calls and messages about a fast-food employee continuing to work after having a known exposure to a positive COVID-19 case. We appreciate the community's concern and thank everyone for alerting us. After an investigation, we determined that the restaurant has followed appropriate protocols and there's no risk to the public.

There had been an employee whose family member had tested positive and the employee has been self-quarantining since finding out the status of the family member. This employee did not have symptoms and communicated the situation to the employer. In accordance with the Health Department and CDC recommendations, the employer immediately took the employee off the schedule for 2 weeks.

Harrisonville Police Warn of Scam

During this difficult time, we all need to remember that scammers are still looking for victims. To get in front of the attempts by the bad guys to steal your money, we at HPD wanted to just give you some advice. The U.S. Government will soon be sending millions of Americans stimulus checks. If you qualify to receive one of these checks, you do not have to sign up or provide additional banking or personal information.

1. Be alert for phone scams, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury Department, or any other government agency will NOT contact you by phone to collect information for stimulus payment processing.
2. Be alert for phishing scams. Government agencies will NOT email or text you to collect information for stimulus payment processing. Watch for suspicious emails or texts messages with links or attachments requesting information for processing stimulus deposits or checks. This also applies to state agencies.

Remember if it seems to good to be true then it very well may be. The predators who work the scams are very creative and have nothing better to do but try and find new ways to steal your money. Remind your family members, friends and neighbors via phone, email or text about this and we can help each other not become victims.

From the city of Peculiar

From the desk of Heather Diehl Farmers Insurance

In compliance with the new Bates County Order, yesterday we closed our lobby to the public. We are an "essential" business, therefore, we are still in the office working (following mandated guidelines for social distancing).

We are still able to do all business via phone, email, mail or using our door mail slot here at the office. I have to admit though, yesterday while exchanging papers through the mail slot with a client standing outside, felt more like we were a fast food place handing him a hamburger. This is NOT what we want, but we are doing our part to prevent the spread of this COVID-19 outbreak. Please know that we are still here and available to help our clients in any way we can.

Our prayers are with other businesses also as they push through these trying times, as some have had to close completely temporarily.

With all things, we must put our faith in God, and trust that he will bring us all through this. I know that for myself, I have taken this time without all of the hustle/bustle of my kids' sports and activities, to actually have an opportunity to "slow down" and enjoy more family time in the evenings. I hope that others are making the best of this time also.

Missing person has been found after four days in Vernon County

A Cedar county resident who has been missing since Thursday, March 26, was found Monday morning and was life flighted to a Joplin hospital. According to Sheriff’s Office officials, dispatch received a report Saturday afternoon of a possible missing person near the area of Zodiac and 2925 Rd in Vernon County. Responding deputies learned that no one had been in contact with the missing person since the previous Thursday afternoon. He was believed to be hunting for mushrooms and never returned.

Multiple agencies were notified and called out to assist the Sheriff’s Office in the search that lasted Saturday evening, all day Sunday and into Monday. The Sheriff’s Office requested the Vernon County Ambulance District Search and Rescue Team, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Missouri Conservation Department.

According to officials, a Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter spotted what they believed to be a person in a field approximately 150 yards from a river. Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher and Detective Nick Norval were in the area conducting a search along the river and located the person while in contact with the helicopter. Sheriff Mosher said the person was in and out of consciousness and extremely dehydrated when they got to him.

A Med Flight helicopter landed in the field because it was too far from any road to get a vehicle to him. He was then transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin. The Sheriff said they were extremely grateful to have an outcome like this, “this isn’t the outcome we normally have after someone has been missing in the woods for four days.” The Sheriff said he wanted to thank all the responding agencies and volunteers who helped during the search but wanted to especially thank the pilots who spotted the missing person. “

If they hadn’t spotted him when they did, this may have been a completely different outcome, so I hope they know they saved a life today” said Mosher.

COVID-19: Our new world, for now

"All I know is what I read in the papers"

That statement was made famous by Will Rogers, and remains true today as we work our way through the Covid-19 pandemic. While we get our constant news feed it appears Covid-19 affects some drastically; others not so drastic. And how do we know how it will affect us individually? No one knows for sure. There are still a lot of unanswered questions.

One thing we do know- social distancing is the best bet. While it may seem disrespectful to decline a friendly handshake, we can be mutually assured it's for good reason. Same goes for over-the-fence chit chat and other face to face conversation, that before now, was never a problem.

We received many calls following the news post this weekend regarding the Stay At Home order put in place by the Bates County Health Center. Will we be arrested if I go out? No. Can I go to work? Yes. Can I shop? Yes.

It's not a lockdown.

The Stay At Home Order is a common sense approach to keeping the infection numbers down. While New York, New Orleans, all along the west coast and many other parts of the country are seeing huge numbers, we here in and around Bates County are 'behind' in terms of infection. However, the number of cases all around us go up every day. Hence, avoid getting within 6 feet of other people unless you absolutely have to.

This means you can do brief grocery shopping, doctor visits and other necessary business. Call ahead and make sure the place you need to go is open. Yes, you can go for a walk or ride your bike. Carry anti-bacterial/alcohol wipes with you to wipe down before and after you touch things. Wear a mask if you want.

The idea of social distancing seems strange and foreign. As Americans, it's not in our nature. However, in everyone's interest, it's what we have to do for awhile.

We can hope to 'flatten the curve' in the weeks ahead. However, even after we reach the back side of 'the curve', we will need to be diligent to avoid another mass outbreak. Yes, it could be a long summer but remember, it's in all of our best interests.

What to do with your time? First, stay calm. Find a new hobby. Explore your options. Exercise.

Remember that many of our ancestors overcame adversity such as the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, WWI, WWII and other things that greatly 'disrupted' their lives and required temporary changes... but looking back, it appears those folks weathered the storm and came back stronger than ever.

Another good thing to do with your time is reading.  Here are some good resources about Covid-19 to get you started. And when you're done, we suggest a good book by the author of your choice so you can relax a little:

News From The Cass County Commission

The Cass County Commission would like to take a minute and ask each and everyone of you to only post information that is factual and verified by our Cass County Health Department about COVID-19.

There is so much misinformation out on social media that we are receiving so many calls asking questions and tying up our resources which makes it difficult to work on things related to the COVID-19.

If you have questions or concerns, please visit our Cass County Health Department Website. This site is kept very up-to-date. We post information immediately as it comes in.
We would like to cover a few items that are totally false.

FIRST: You will not be stopped by law enforcement in Cass County asking for a letter that states that your job is an essential part of the workforce.

SECOND: We have only 12 confirmed cases as of 3/29/2020 at 10:00am. We do have some people that have been self-quarantined out of precaution and safety for the general public. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY HAVE COVID-19.

THIRD: We ask that you practice social distancing and to stay home as much as possible, so that COVID-19 will end quickly.
I ask all our friends, family, and citizens to work together on this and take care of each other.

Thank you - The Cass County Commission
