From the desk of Harrisonville Mayor Judy Bowman

COVID-19 Update
There is a lot of news circulating about the coronavirus and it seems overwhelming at times. I share what I know as it applies to Harrisonville. Sometimes I will share other relevant posts. Sometimes I may not post for a day or two if there are no updates for us. Today I need to post.

COVID-19 (coronavirus) is a highly contagious virus. There is no vaccine and we have no immunity to it. A vaccine could be months or more than a year away. Social distancing measures are the only way to stop person-to-person spread of the virus. In his daily briefing, Governor Parson said, “These efforts ARE working, and we MUST keep it up. Our actions today will determine where we are weeks from now."

The Cass County Health Department reported in their daily briefing today that Cass County has a total of 44 cases with 18 of those from Harrisonville. They reported 4 deaths with 3 of those deaths being from Harrisonville.

Sadly, those three deaths and most of the cases have been from Meadow View Health & Rehabilitation in Harrisonville. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends of those who have passed. In their press release, the facility states that, “The ten residents previously testing positive remain isolated on site and the two employees previously testing positive remain at home recovering in quarantine.”

Some of you know that I have a health care background. I have been a nurse all my adult life. I implore you now, as a nurse who just happens to be your mayor, please stay at home, avoid crowds of 10 or more, wear a face mask over your mouth and nose when in public. Do this in addition to the hygiene precautions regarding hand washing and coughing.

Yes, as Governor Parson mentioned, people are recovering, and we celebrate that. However, as of Friday, Missouri as a state had 3799 cases and 96 deaths. As of 3:00 PM today, Missouri has 4388 cases and 114 deaths. As our numbers continue to rise, we must protect ourselves and realize that this is going to be our new normal for now.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay home.
