On Saturday, October 31, 2020 approximately 1113 hours St. Clair County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a 18 month old male child wondered off from the family at their hunting cabin located in St. Clair County in the 1200 block of SW Y Highway. The reporting party, father of the missing child, states the child was last seen by the paternal grandfather approximately 1010 hours. The family initiated a quick search then called 911 to report the missing child.

The St. Clair County Sheriff's deputy arrived on scene approximately 1120 hours. Other responding units began arriving shortly thereafter. Volunteers were driving roads, riding horseback and ATVs, and on foot began a grid search of the dense woods surrounding the cabin.

After all units were on scene, the impromptu search team(s) were recalled to organize a grid search with all hands. At approximately 1335 hours the helicopter team spotted the red and black flannel pajamas last known to be worn by the juvenile. War of the Worlds to be broadcast on FM 92.1

October 30, 1938: Aliens Invade New York!

Orson Welles’ 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast has become famous for sparking panic in its listeners. It began with a report of an unusual cylindrical object falling on a farm in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey where a crowd of police and onlookers have gathered… suddenly Martians emerge from the cylinder and attack using a heat-ray… then came “live” news updates detailing an alien invasion taking place around the country… which then lead to a reporter on a rooftop in Manhattan describing giant Martian war machines releasing clouds of poisonous smoke and desperate New Yorkers fleeing and "dropping like flies" … Join FM 92 at 7 pm Saturday, October 31st as we re-visit the Mercury Theater in 1938 and re-broadcast this infamous program courtesy of the Bates County Museum.

Wood heat safety tips

If you're among the thousands who have succumbed to the lure of the wood burning stove, keep in mind that the return to the "good old days" of wood stove heating can have some old-fashioned drawbacks.

Fire hazard is one of them.

The resurgence of the wood burner as a supplementary source of heat has led to an alarming—and growing—number of fires traceable to careless installation or misuse.

The purpose of this pamphlet is to help bridge a generation gap in wood stove knowledge by providing some basic information on the selection, installation, use and maintenance of solid fuel heating equipment.

Here are some principal do's and don'ts:

DO—make sure there is enough clearance between the stove and combustible materials, including floors, walls and ceilings.
DO—place the stove on a noncombustible, fire resistant base.
DO—have a mason or other competent person inspect the chimney.
DO—burn only dry, well-seasoned wood.
DO—consider opening a window a crack for ventilation.
DO—dispose of ashes in a closed metal container outside the house.

DON’T—extend the stove pipe through a wall or ceiling unless there is no possible alternative.
DON’T—connect a wood stove to a fireplace chimney unless the fireplace has been sealed off.
DON’T—connect a wood stove to a chimney serving another appliance burning other fuels.
DON’T—start a stove fire with flammable fluids, such as gasoline.
DON’T—burn trash in a stove; doing so can start a chimney fire.
DON’T—let a wood fire burn unattended or overnight.

· Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands or in the air. Always try to cough or sneeze into a tissue, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into your arm.
· As much as you can, avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.
· Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

· Any new cough
· Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
· Fatigue
· Muscle or body aches
· Headache
· New loss of taste or smell
· Sore throat

Sincerely,
Terry Mayfield
