Vehicle Pursuit Results in Seizure of Gun and Drugs Cass County

Around 4:45 pm today deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle on 2 Highway east of Harrisonville. The driver of a blue Chevy truck fled at a high rate of speed through Harrisonville and then north on I-49.

Officers with Peculiar Police, Belton Police, Grandview Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with deploying tire deflation devices as the vehicle traveled north. The assisting agencies were able to deflate several of the tires and allowed a Criminal Apprehension Unit equipped with a Grappler device to stop the vehicle on I-49 north of 150 Highway.

Two subjects were taken into custody. Deputies discovered suspected narcotics and a stolen firearm in the vehicle. Charges are pending in the case.

“We will continue to arrest dangerous criminals who victimize our community. Today multiple agencies working together on a regional radio system were able to successfully coordinate a response to this pursuit and take two subjects into custody without injury,” Sheriff Jeff Weber.

Vote Brenda Cecil for Ward 2 Butler City Council

Without a doubt this pandemic has and will continue to take a toll on city operations. Sales tax revenue will be down and with that being the main source of income in an already financially stressed system there will be new challenges.

Using the same thinking and rationale that has barely kept us afloat will not be the most effective way to handle this situation.

These challenges will require creativity and organization to overcome. The right people with fresh perspectives will be the best approach.

It is time to get serious with our choices.
I appreciate your vote for Ward 2 Butler City Council on June 2nd.

Thanks,
Brenda Cecil

Omnibus Child Protection Bill Passes Missouri's General Assembly

Abbreviated session sees wins for kids

May 15, 2020 – House Bill 1414, sponsored by Representative Sheila Solon (R – St. Joseph) was truly agreed and finally passed by the Missouri General Assembly yesterday, sending an omnibus package of child protections to Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s desk.

“Missouri’s children and our child welfare system had great needs prior to the COVID crisis,” said Craig Stevenson, Director of Policy and Advocacy for Kids Win Missouri. “The crisis has only exacerbated and further exposed some of these needs, and we’re glad the legislature was able to come together in a bipartisan way to protect our children.”

HB 1414 included key priorities to protect children, including:
Ensuring youth who are homeless have access to a birth certificate for free, have access to health coverage through Medicaid and can seek mental health care

Fixing a background check duplication issue for child care providers and allowing for non-expiring child care licenses

Creating temporary alternative placement agreements, a mechanism to provide services to parents and family placement to ensure safety of children who are not brought into foster care

Ensuring timely risk assessments within 72 hours of child abuse and neglect reports

Guaranteeing protections for employees of child advocacy centers

Advocates have had increasing concerns for children experiencing abuse and neglect, particularly with the various stay-at-home orders in place throughout the state and children having less access to mandated reporters, like teachers or child care providers.

“Through the pandemic with a decrease in calls to the child abuse and neglect hotline and growing concern for the well-being of our children,” said Jessica Seitz, Director of Public Policy. “By requiring the Missouri Children’s Division to complete a standard risk assessment within 72 hours of a report of child abuse and neglect, creating temporary alternative placement agreements, and including protections for employees of child advocacy centers, HB 1414 prioritizes improving our child welfare system and the safety of our most vulnerable children.”

Many of the bills provisions also aim to help youth who are homeless in accessing vital health care and records.

”We’re thankful for the forward thinking legislature understanding that investing in and protecting youth experiencing homelessness has a great human return and is good for all Missouri,” said Mary Chant, CEO of the Missouri Coalition of Children’s Agencies.

Though there were some provisions of the bill that were omitted in the final version, advocates are hopeful that the new policies will help keep children safe and healthy.
“Our work is far from over, but given the current circumstances, we are grateful the General Assembly took the steps to further support child well-being in our state,” Stevenson said. “This legislation included the work of many legislators on both sides of the isle and we look forward to continuing to work throughout the interim and into next legislative session to build on the progress made this year.”

News from Osage Valley Electric Cooperative

The impacts of COVID-19 are being felt by all of our Member-Owners. We encourage you to use energy wisely during this time. As you spend more time at home, you may see a surge in home energy use. Here are some steps you can take to control your energy bill:

Program your thermostat to maximize energy savings. Setting your thermostat 1 degree lower when heating or 1 degree higher when cooling can reduce energy use by up to 5 percent.

Wash only full loads of laundry and use cold water. Using warm water instead of hot can cut a load’s energy use in half, and cold water will save even more.

Air dry dishes. This step can cut your dishwasher’s energy use by up to 50 percent.

Substitute LEDs for conventional lightbulbs. Lighting can amount to up to 12 percent of monthly energy use. LED bulbs can cut lighting costs by 75 percent.

Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use. Small appliances and electronics consume energy even when not in use. When powered on, game consoles, televisions and similar electronics are responsible for up to 12 percent of energy use.

Turn off lights and ceiling fans when you leave the room. Fans cool people, not the air, so they don’t help if you aren’t in the room.

If you are unable to manage your bill due to the financial impacts of the pandemic, please contact us. We are committed to keeping the lights on for you! #PowerOn

Traffic Stop Leads to Guns, Drugs, and Stolen Property

A simple traffic stop Thursday morning turned into a multiple felony arrest after the seizure of drugs and guns. According to Vernon County Sheriff’s Office officials, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on E. Molly Rd in rural Nevada, MO on Thursday morning. During the traffic stop, 29 year-old Dakota Herren was arrested on an active traffic warrant.

Upon further investigation during the traffic stop, suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, two loaded handguns, and an illegally modified rifle were located in the vehicle. Sheriff’s Office Detectives were then called in to conduct a follow up on the investigation. During the investigation, detectives recovered stolen property at a separate location.

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said this was a good example of proactive patrol coordinating with investigations resulting in dangerous weapons and drugs being taken off of the streets of Vernon County. “Any time we can recover illegal drugs, guns, and recover stolen property, it’s a good day.” The stolen property is being returned to the owner.

On Thursday afternoon, the Courts issued an arrest warrant charging Herren with the following charges: Felony possession of a Controlled Substance, Felony Unlawful Possession of an Illegal Weapon, Felony Unlawful Use of Weapon, as well as several traffic related charges.

Herren is being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.
