In the thick of it, kindness prevails

The following message appeared in our inbox yesterday and we thought we'd run it verbatim to show that regardless of our current situation, good people are everywhere

I took my 81 year old Mother to the License Bureau in Butler yesterday. She has Alzheimer’s and needs help getting around. Her Driver’s License expires Saturday and we needed to replace it with a state photo ID. Since there were six people in line ahead of us, the lady who greeted me offered to call my cell phone when it was close to Mom’s place in line. This would allow her to stay in the car and not have to wait inside with a group.

Once we came inside, two different gentlemen offered their more cushioned chairs to us. One gentleman appeared to be about eighty; the other between forty and fifty. The clerk who helped us when it was Mom’s turn was very kind and patient with us. The Alzheimer’s has progressed to the point that she can no longer sign her name, but she is still able to shuffle around and communicate a little.

As I helped Mom slowly leave the office, another gentleman left his spot in line and patiently held the door open for us. I didn’t think to look at the year on the Butler High School letter jacket he was wearing, but knew he was in his late teens.

It was heartwarming to see my mother treated with the kindness and understanding from the employees in the License Bureau. What’s more, the polite behavior from three different generations of patrons demonstrated that true gentlemen with manners still exist in my hometown.
