Forever a day in Bates County history

On August 25, 1863... Union General Thomas Ewing issues his infamous General Orders No. 11 that would forever change Bates County, the only one of the four counties included in the order that was totally depopulated. Nothing would ever be the same.

In 2014, the Historical Society dedicated a bronze plaque on the Courthouse lawn that tells the story of the destruction and burning of our County.
