Shirley Frances Hunter, age 65, passed away peacefully at the family home, after a short illness, on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at her home in Clinton, Missouri with her loved ones by her side. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 3, 2022 at Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton.

Visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:00 PM prior to the service. The family request that masks be worn for the visitation and service. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to GVMH Hospice or St. Jude's and can be left in care of the funeral home.

Shirley was born the thirteenth of fifteen children to Johnie & Velma Snowden on September 28, 1956 in Stayton, Oregon. Shirley grew up with her mother, father, 9 brothers and 5 sisters, in various parts of the United States and graduated from Blue Eye High School in 1975.

After graduation, Shirley ventured out for various jobs in Branson and then Wyoming. Wyoming didn’t turn out to be her cup of tea, so when her sister Linda offered her a job at the Clinton Country Club, Shirley jumped at the chance. It was there that she met the love of her life, Rodney Hunter, where he also worked as a greenskeeper on the golf course. Shirley and Rodney were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton on November 24, 1979. Shirley and Rodney settled in Clinton and in 1982, their daughter, Tara, was born. Tara was the center of Shirley’s life, and she was incredibly proud of her when she graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in film production.

Shirley had a servant’s heart and was always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. She was a hard worker her entire life and found great satisfaction in a job well done. She loved to tell a good joke, play a round of golf with her friends, watch the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, grow flowers in the summer and spend time with family and friends. Shirley always looked forward to her annual 4th of July party— complete with a fireworks display that had no rival.

Shirley will be remembered for her love of family and fun.

She is preceded in death by her mother Velma Snowden; her father Johnie Snowden; brothers Allen, Kenny, Virgil, Ferris, and Lonnie Snowden.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney Hunter of the home; her daughter, Tara Hunter of wherever she is working at the moment. Obituary - Leonard Robert Payette

Leonard Robert Payette, age 75, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.

The playground whistle blows. Everyone freezes. And in his loudest, baddest principal voice, Mr. Payette announces recess is over and everyone lines up. But a kindergartner strolls up to him, announces he has ketchup on his nose, and the tough exterior melts away. He starts to laugh.

That was the embodiment of Leonard Payette, appearing firm and stern on the outside but a kind and gentle man on the inside with generations of students, classrooms, and teachers impacted by his passion for education.

Leonard was full of grit, resilience, tenacity, and a little onerous. He was thoughtful, had quick wit, humorous, giving, and above all generous. In 2019 while in the hospital, he offered to buy the nurses and doctors dinner nightly from his favorite Mexican or Thai restaurant so they didn’t need to eat hospital food. When his daughters were younger, he sat in the make-believe salon for hours allowing his makeup and hair to be done.

He was born in New Bedford MA, but Southern California became his home for decades. There is where the majority of his adult life was lived and where he was happiest - in the town of Solvang, the mountains of Lake Arrowhead or in his home watching The Simpsons. He is preceded in death by his best friend, wife and partner, Elaine Payette, and his parents Ernest and Cecile Payette and brother, John Payette. Carrying on his legacy are his three siblings, Gerard, Raymond and Jackie, and his two daughters, Carla (Jerome) and Emily(Daven). He is survived by four grandchildren, Aiden, Bella, Amelia, and Leo - his namesake. Little Leo would be consistent in reminding Big Leo to watch his sugar.

It has been 18 years since he has been with you Mom, but he is coming to you. And hopefully, you two go on a heavenly date and eat Macho Nachos from the highest-rated YELP Mexican restaurant in heaven.

Arrangements: Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, Missouri 816.322.5278

Celebration of Life for David Robert Etterling

Celebration of Life for David Robert Etterling
Submitted by Sarah Lacer

Robert Alexander Lee Etterling (Alex) would like to announce a life celebration for his father. On December 27th 2021, David Robert Etterling passed.

The official obituary and memorial service will be at a later date to have him placed near his father and eventually his mother at Mount Moriah in Kansas City. There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony held at Altona Baptist church on Sunday, January 9th 1:00pm.

Everyone that loved David is welcome as he loved so many. He was a great friend to many people. He frequently expressed to me the multitude of people that impact his life daily. I could never be able to recount each of you by name. I don’t want to leave any single person unlisted because you all were near and dear to his heart.

Alex would like to honor his dad and meet all the wonderful people that crossed his life. Our small town came together to support him with his medical needs and David always wanted me to make sure that when this day comes you all know you have a place in his heart. I know he felt it from all of you as well because I know about all the OATES trips, all of the medical professionals, all the home health professionals, the Methodist church family, the Altona Baptist family, the Yoss Thriftway family, the Harrisonville Sonic family, and so many more that I’m wishing I took notes.

Anyone that knows they would like to attend please let Sandi Schoor know so I have an approximate count for the church family hosting our celebration on Sunday January 9th at 1:00pm.

Forecast Snow Amounts Saturday

Not much change to the previous forecast. Timing of freezing precipitation still looks to arrive after midnight tomorrow night. The heaviest snow looks to occur north of a St Joseph to Kirksville line where 5 to 8 inches of snow is likely.

The minor change to the forecast was south of that line where a longer period of sleet/freezing rain overnight Friday into Saturday morning may lower snow totals slightly.

That being said 2 to 5 inches is expected across the KC Metro with heavier amounts expected across the northern Metro.

Freezing precipitation will transition to all snow through the morning with snow continuing through the afternoon before tapering off in the evening Saturday.

From the desk of Bates County Coroner Greg Mullinax

Dear Bates County,

As long as I’ve been Coroner I have tried to keep you informed as possible on the activities of the Coroner’s office. I know you understand that much of the work is sensitive, so I attempt to inform you while maintaining some discretion to the details of people and their families. While most of our work goes unseen by many, it is still a public office and a public trust. So I hope that my reports give a fair understanding of how I’ve spent my time and this portion of your tax dollars.

Most importantly, know this: It has and continues to be a privilege to serve my County in this capacity. If I or Deputy Miller have had to interact with your family this year, I hope you feel we’ve treated you with professionalism and your loved one with dignity. Notwithstanding the job we have to do, we are sorry for your loss.

When Covid became a reality and I felt it’s casework increasing the demands on my time, I met with the Bates County Commission in the Spring and gave them a picture of the situation. They were prompt to assist me with securing a Deputy Coroner; Deputy Dustin Miller was sent for state training and has been on board for roughly the second half of this year. He has been a tremendous help to me.

As of today for 2021, my office has investigated a total of 135 deaths. 63 went on to become full investigations, 67 hospice deaths were reviewed, 3 hospital deaths, and 2 recent cases remain open as of today. In 2021 investigative procedures included 20 External Examinations, 15 Complete Autopsies, 40 Toxicology Investigations, and 45 medical record/chart reviews.

Personally, I thank you for the privilege of serving you in this capacity. My best wishes for 2022 for you and your family!

Greg D. Mullinax
Bates County Coroner

MoDOT News Release: Use caution when driving New Year’s Weekend

Use caution when driving New Year’s Weekend

Freezing rain and snow could create slippery holiday travel

JEFFERSON CITY – Ice in your glass is nice. Ice on the road—not so much. The new year is bringing the first significant winter weather of the season. Periods of sleet, freezing rain and snow throughout the state beginning late Friday and ending early Sunday could create slippery road conditions. The Missouri Department of Transportation urges travelers to use extreme caution and consult weather forecasts in your area and along the route to your destination when making holiday and weekend travel plans. Consulting MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map should be the first thing you do before taking to the road.

Even slight glazing of the pavement could impact travel, especially on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses. Slow down and allow yourself extra time if you must drive. If attending holiday parties on New Year’s Eve, consider staying at your party destination, especially if your celebration includes alcoholic beverages. You may need to stay put until the storm ends Sunday and road conditions improve.

Road conditions could deteriorate rapidly wherever freezing precipitation is falling. It only takes a little bit of ice to create slippery roads. Bitterly cold temperatures are expected to follow the storm, which could further impede travel and road clearing operations. If you are involved in a crash or slide off the road, the safest thing to do is to stay inside your vehicle and wait for help to arrive.

“Our crews will be out all weekend including clean up on Sunday. With our high turnover in staff this year, we have a lot of new team members who will be training through this first storm,” said MoDOT Chief Safety and Operations Officer Becky Allmeroth. “We advise the public to stay off the roads as much as possible and give us extra room and time to clean up after the storm.”

If your holiday plans involve alcohol, make sure you have a safe and sober ride pre-arranged for the drive home. Designate a driver, call a ride share or make arrangement to stay at your party destination.

There were 60 people killed and 270 seriously injured in Missouri traffic crashes between December 10, 2020 and January 1, 2021. Fifteen of the fatalities and 47 of the serious injuries involved a substance-impaired driver.

Check all current Missouri road conditions on the Traveler Information Map at www.modot.org, or through MoDOT’s smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android phones. You can also find road conditions and warnings by following MoDOT on Facebook and Twitter or by calling 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636) to speak with a customer service representative 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Dressing for cold weather

Although snow totals for this weekend remain uncertain, one thing that does remain certain is that the first really cold snap of the season will affect us.

Obituary - William "Stan" Johnson

William "Stan" Johnson, age 88, of Clinton, Missouri passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare in Clinton, Missouri. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service. Inurnment to follow in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and can be left in care of the funeral home.

William Stanley Johnson, the son of William S. Johnson, Sr. and Madeline Ford Johnson was born on November 19, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri.

As a young man, Stan was extremely active in Boy Scouts obtaining some of the highest awards available to a Boy Scout at that time. He was an Eagle Scout with 3 palms. He earned his God and Country Award, merit badges too numerous to mention. In 1947 Stan was called by H. Roe Bartle to the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He also worked on the permanent staff at Camp Osceola.

In February of 1954 Stan married Norma Black. To this union were born four children, Mark Russell, Rex Allen, Star Rena and Kimberly Ruth.

Stan was always an avid car buff. From great street vehicles to being involved with super modified stock cars. Because of his love for automotive challenges, he decided he would like to put his knowledge and skill into something profitable. In 1958 he bought his own service station and garage and at that time he became Stan’s Skelly Service at 85th & Holmes, KC, MO. And there took up his second residency for the next 28 years. He became very successful and ultimately took a partner. A longtime friend John Barthol became that partner and the business then became a south Kansas City household name, Stan & John’s Service.

Stan and Norma retired in 1984 and moved to Clinton, Missouri. Where Stan became heavily involved in fishing and ultimately became a Truman Lake fishing guide. He spent an additional 12 years doing something he absolutely loved. Spending time in the great outdoors with other anglers. Competitive tournament fishing was just an added bonus.

Stan, with wife Norma, organized, promoted and made possible one of the largest charity tournaments on the lake all in the name of Ozanam Home for Boys. The amount of money raised for the boy’s home was Stan and Norma’s thank you to the participating anglers.

Traveling was high on the list of Stan’s joys. Seven years spent in Baja, Mexico with son, Mark. Those many days and hours spent in a barren desert together created a relationship and bond for life.

Traveling some 4000 miles to and from California three times in six months was “no big deal” because it was to be part of daughter, Star and granddaughter, Shawn’s Charity League. Distance was never an issue when it came to spending time with children and grandchildren. Driving to Colorado for one of daughter, Kim’s horse show again was “no big deal”.

Then, on a whim driving to Ann Arbor, Michigan to take grandson Michael to dinner. It sounds ridiculous, but it happened.

Not to forget two more granddaughters, Jessice and Shea. Driving to California to make sure the girls attended a dance competition while Mom and Dad are out of the country on business. This is just what he did for family.

Stan is preceded in death by his son, Rex Allen and his parents, Bill and Madeline Johnson.

Survivors include his wife Norma of the home, three children; Mark and Becky Johnson of Ladera Ranch, California, Star and Ted Dodd of Palos Verdes Estates, California, Kim and George Dixon of Carbondale, California, four grandchildren; Michael Anderson of Torrance, California, Shawnie Anderson of Palos Verdes Estates, California, Jessica and Chris Ferrero of Ladera Ranch, California, Shea and Ryan Allen of San Juan Capistrano, California, four great grandchildren; Charlotte and Emerson Ferraro, Lux Olivia and Quinn Allen.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.

Be Extra Vigilant When Driving In Inclement Weather

Missourians expect the weather to change and it appears they won’t be disappointed this week. As New Year’s approaches, the forecast shows colder temperatures, rain, and wet snow showers on the horizon.

Weather affects traffic patterns and can make driving hazardous. Lower overnight temperatures may cause wet roadways to freeze and become slick.

Troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol urge everyone to pay attention to weather conditions and make smart decisions regarding travel. If conditions dictate, avoid driving on Missouri’s roadways. When you travel, make sure your vehicle is completely clean of snow, use your headlights to increase visibility, and reduce your speed when the roadway appears wet or snow is present. Remember: Missouri law states if you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on.

During inclement weather, driving the speed limit is not "exercising the highest degree of care." Missouri law (Section 304.012 RSMo) states the responsibility of exercising the highest degree of care while driving rests on the driver's shoulders. Please adjust your speed to the weather. Do not use cruise control and increase your following distance. It is next to impossible to stop quickly on snow-covered or slick roads. Allow extra driving time for you to reach your destination at a slow, safe speed.

Troopers suggest keeping your fuel tank at least half full. In preparation for winter weather, place an ice scraper, battery booster cables, blankets, extra coats, gloves, water, non-perishable food, first aid kit, flashlight, small shovel, and a bag of sand or cat litter in your trunk now, before an emergency occurs.

Before you travel, make sure your cell phone is fully charged and keep it with you. Do not use your cell phone when you are driving; park your vehicle well off the roadway or in a parking lot before placing a call. The Missouri State Highway Patrol emergency number is 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). These numbers ring at the nearest troop headquarters. Troopers are available to assist you.

Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before driving to help determine if the trip can be completed safely. Missouri’s Road Condition Report is available at 1-888-275-6636 or MoDOT’s Road Condition Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The MoDOT Traveler Information Map app can be downloaded free of charge to your smart devices.

Please remember to buckle up, pay attention, be courteous, and obey all traffic laws. When weather conditions make driving hazardous, drive only when absolutely necessary.

Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri. The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back …”
