Show and Tell goes well

The annual Show and Tell was held today at Robertson Hall at the Bates county museum and those attending were treated to an interesting cross section of artifacts.

A few of the items were a painted plate that survived many years as a family heirloom, some items gathered from around the world that included a hefty knife made from a leaf spring, and a century old McCalls magazine that paid homage to Butler, Mo.

There’s a lot more coming to the museum including a chance to win a very special rifle and the display of a quilt in honor of the Missouri Bicentennial celebration; more info to be published soon.

Attention city of Rich Hill

It is imperative that Proposition 1 passes to maintain sustained income for the City of Rich Hill in the future. Franchise fees charged to utilities operating in the city limits is common practice. Most cities have generalized franchise fee agreements in place.

Rich Hill has franchise fee agreements with several entities now; however these have an expiration date and must be brought back and approved every so many years to continue.

They also have a limit of how many continuations are allowed. In passing Proposition 1, we bring Rich Hill up to current standards of not having to have individual agreements with companies.

The city would then charge a standard fee that is necessary for maintaining operations in the city. Police, street repairs, parks, and the cemetery all rely on these franchise fees to continue operations without taking money from the citizens pockets.

I understand that franchise fees and PILOTS can be very confusing, but if you have any questions please reach out to a councilperson or the mayor instead of just voting no.

A day we will never forget....

March 6, 2018 was a tragic day for the Clinton Police Department, when Officer Ryan Morton was shot and killed, along with two other officers being shot. This tragedy shook this community as well as the family and friends of Ryan.

We miss him every day. But, on this day, we choose to remember Ryan's life and how he lived it!! For those that knew him, he was the life of the party and never short on sharing a story or two..... or three!!

Each and every day we at the Clinton Police Department have vowed to be a little better than we were the day before, both in our work life and personal life. This is what Ryan would want....

For all of us to move forward and be the best version of us we can be. We can not express enough appreciation to this community that has supported us through the tragedies we have faced. We couldn't have done it without you!!

Bates County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers Return

Nearly a year after Auxiliary members of Bates County Memorial Hospital were sent home for their safety at the onset of the pandemic, volunteers will return to “work”. As of Monday, March 8, volunteers will help man the information desk alongside screeners, greeting patients and visitors and assisting with the new registration process.

On March 4, volunteers gathered for a preliminary “back-to-work" meeting at the hospital. Greg Weaver, interim CEO, highlighted some of the hospital’s improvements and safety precautions and procedures that were necessary for the pandemic. Melinda Jackson, Human Resources Director and Auxiliary Coordinator, reviewed some of the changes the volunteers could expect, and recognized the Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year – Paula Shaffer.

“It’s so good to see their faces again,” noted an employee after passing Auxiliary members in the hallway as the group made their way to the hospital’s east lobby, where they were given a tour of what will soon be the new gift shop, now under construction. Completion of the gift shop is estimated for April, but an opening date is yet to be determined.

The current screening process for COVID-19 will continue at Bates County Memorial Hospital in which nurses assist patients and visitors at the front entrance.

History of Bates County: On The Air

Bill Thornton, Co-Founder of
KMAM/KMOE
In 1922, Butler's original radio station was built and operated by Clair C. Rhodes, better known as "Doc" Rhodes, who owned and operated the drugstore on the north side of the square. The station was possibly the first radio station in Missouri and the seventh in the nation to be licensed by the government.

The radio station was called "WNAR", which stood for "We Never Are Ready" , because the station was operated simply as a hobby and was on the air after school  hours with the local high school students at the controls. There were no rules to follow since, at this time, the government  did not take this new thing seriously.  And so the kids aired whatever came to mind. The station was disbanded around 1924, and it was another 38 years before Bates County had this form of public communication again.

At the age of 18, a young man from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, gave up a track scholarship to enlist in the Navy when the Korean conflict arose. He went into electronics in the service and obtained a Broadcast Engineering License, which led to employment at a radio station in his home town when he left the service. Little did he realize that this would eventually lead him to Butler eight years later.

While majoring in journalism at Arkansas State, Bill Thornton worked his way through college as a disc jockey at KRLW in Walnut Ridge, which resulted in his applying to the Federal Communications Commission for permission to establish a radio station in Butler. KMAM-AM went on the air in May of 1962, with his brother, the late Jerry Thornton, as the morning announcer. A contest was held not long after going on the air to decide what the call letters should stand for, and a lady from Rich Hill came up with "Keeping Mid America Moving".

In the beginning, the radio station could only air programs during daylight hours. However, KMOE-FM aired in January, 1975, allowing broadcasting at all hours, which included programming for early morning risers and sports programs at night.

And today, KMAM/KMOE is still located at 800 E. Nursery Street  and may be the only station in the nation that still operates under original family members and ownership.

When the station began broadcasting, vinyl albums were still were still a relatively new item and turntables were a staple; taping was reel-to-reel. All remotes came down telephone wires, and news and weather forecasts arrived via teletype. Now, the announcer has no turntables; they look at a computer screen for constant access to the weather map, and is in touch with the world through the internet, FAX and email.

While computers allow for simplified automation, KMAM/KMOE still provides a live morning show which includes some long time favorites such as the 9 am newscast, farm reports and Swap Shop.
