State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are so excited to announce this week’s State Farm Student Athlete of the week Katie Tourtillott from Rich Hill. Katie is a senior and starting setter for the Lady Tigers volleyball team. Katie was nominated by her Coach Diana Smith.

Coach Smith stated “Katie achieved 1000 assists in her junior year and is only 57 away from 1500. She is currently our co-captain and continues to consistently lead the team with her outstanding play on the court.

She also works hard in the classroom and was Academic All State last season. She is also a member of NHS, FFA, STUCO and the A+ program.” When we asked Katie to tell us something she has learned from playing sports that she can apply later in life she stated “I’ve learned how to commit to something fully. Also, I’ve learned how to work with others and work through disagreements.” We also asked Katie what she believes it takes to be a leader and to excel in her sport of choice.

She stated “to be a leader you have to not let your feelings get in the way and always build others up by vocalizing your support of those on your team. To become an elite athlete you have to have mental toughness and move on when you make a mistake. Becoming successful takes a lot of commitment not only of your time but also consistent hard work.” Katie hopes to continue her career in volleyball and play in college after she graduates.

She would like to major in biochemistry with plans to attend medical school. It was such a pleasure meeting Katie and Coach Smith and we wish the Lady Tigers the best of luck next week as they take on Adrian, Jasper, and Liberal.

Obituary - Kenneth Allen Vickers

Kenneth Allen Vickers, age 65, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at his home in Calhoun, Missouri. Kenneth's wishes were to be cremated. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the Calhoun Cemetery in Calhoun, Missouri. Fond memories and condolences can be left online at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com.

Kenneth Allen Vickers “Kenny” was born on November 19, 1955. Kenny was the youngest of ten children born to Hubert and Ada Mae {Logan} Vickers of Windsor.

Kenny and Toni {Pinkston} were married on December 27, 1979, at Miami, Oklahoma living in Windsor/Calhoun most of their married life except for a few years when they lived in Gonzalez, Texas for his work.

At around 16 years old Kenny tried his hand at running a backhoe, which he proved very successful at until his retirement. Several years ago, he bought his own backhoe to use at home and help friends, neighbors, and family with their projects. In fact, just a few weeks before his death he helped a neighbor with a project even though he wasn’t feeling well—that is just how Kenny was—always helping others. Many hours were spent in his or Chuck’s shop just visiting or solving world problems with the “guys”, hanging out at Floyd and Debbie’s farm planning what projects were on the agenda for the weekend, or cutting wood for everyone’s stove so they all had their stoves hot and ready for “group meetings”.

Toni and Kenny always had fur babies—whether it be horses, dogs or cats. In fact, Junior, his shop cat is still at work guarding the shop. Kenny buried many animals over the years, the backhoe came in real handy for Toni’s horses and those at the Joy farm.

For many years, Saturday mornings were set aside to make rounds to check on his family and friends—which were a very important part of his life. Kenny loved family get togethers—whether it be 4th of July with his family at Farrington Park or Thanksgiving and Christmas meals with Toni’s family.

Kenny was diagnosed with lung cancer and had just started treatment two weeks before his death (due to complications of the cancer).

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, Tommy, Pete and Donald along with sisters Betty Hoover, Mary Kimbrell, and Beverly Stirts. In addition, his mother/father-in-law (Gaynel Mills, Charles Pinkston), two brother in laws (David Pinkston and Jamie Pinkston) along with nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife Toni (whom he loved and worried about so much), his daughter Kishia (from his first marriage) and her daughter Harley. Also, his brother Jack Vickers, sister Sandy Scott, sister’s-in-law Debbie Joy (Floyd) and Judy Dodge. Kenny has many nieces and nephews who were near and dear to his heart, along with all the friends he met along the way.

“There and back again”

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.

One arrested after pursuit in Barton County

On October 3rd, 2021 at approximately 0737hrs a Barton County Sheriffs Deputy was dispatched to Mindenmines, Mo for a past tense vehicle theft. Once on scene the Deputy gathered the information about the vehicle and also learned that a dump trailer was attached to the truck as well at the time it was taken. Once the Deputy cleared the scene he advised other Deputies and the Sheriff of the theft.

At approximately 1030hrs a citizen called 911 and stated they were following the vehicle they believed was stolen from Mindenmines on O Highway in rural Barton County. The Deputy that took the report was near the area and responded.

Once the Deputy got behind the vehicle and activated his lights and siren the vehicle sped up and failed to yield to the Deputy. The Deputy initiated a pursuit with the vehicle which reached speeds of 100mph.

The stolen vehicle at one point forced a motorist off the roadway. Sheriff Simpson was able to get in to position and deploy a tire deflation device that successfully struck 6 tires on the vehicle and trailer. The suspect continued to drive for approximately 6 more miles entering the city limits of Liberal, Mo.

The vehicle came to a stop when it entered a field off of K Highway and the driver realized he had no where to go due to being surrounded by patrol cars and no tires to get him anywhere. Deputies were able to take the suspect in to custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Blake Lundberg (39) of Ft. Scott, KS. Lundberg has been charged with Tampering with a motor vehicle 1st Degree, Resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a substantial risk to the public, and Possession of Controlled substance for the Suspected Methamphetamine he admitted to throwing from the vehicle while being pursued. Lundberg is currently being held on a Capias warrant for his charges.

"Sheriff Simpson wants to remind citizens to lock your vehicles and personal belongings when they are unattended. Theft crimes are still on the rise and we will do our best to locate your items and return them to you.

Sheriff wants people to understand as well that we are not always working just one incident at a time, we have multiple investigations that are ongoing and they all need attention. Please help us by securing your belongings."

Chief Deputy
Justin Ehrsam

Bobbie met the love of her life, Orley Nivel Bohannon, and they were married on June 21, 1942 in Flint, Michigan. They enjoyed 36 years together before his passing on March 6, 1979. Bobbie lived in Michigan and Kansas City before settling down in Cass County, spending most of her life in Harrisonville. Bobbie enjoyed reading, completing crosswords and jigsaw puzzles, and watching the Game Show Network, especially Jeopardy. She also had a love for baseball, whether it was watching her son, Larry, her grandkids, or the KC Royals, she likely would ask you to wait until the game was over to do other things, regardless of what it might be, including once when she wanted to postpone a surgery. She was a true matriarch and always put her family at the forefront, often found reading or playing games with her grandchildren, because she always had the time to give to them. Bobbie was blessed to be able to go camping with her daughters, Kay and Vicki, across the country to wherever they could set up their tent. This resulted in trips to over 40 states, the last one being when Bobbie was 87 and they camped throughout South Dakota. After she went into the nursing home, she began to enjoy sitting and watching her hummingbird feeders outside of her window. Bobbie will be missed by all those who knew her, but leaves behind many wonderful memories.

Obituary - Sherrie Doody

The world lost a one-of a kind woman. Sherrie Doody passed away surrounded by those who loved her on October 4, 2021. She was the biological mother of Ashley Caviel and Michael Doody although she was considered a surrogate mother to countless others. She leaves behind 3 grandchildren, 9 brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews that she cherished dearly.

Sherrie lived her 57 years of life on her own terms. For most of her life, you rarely found her without a Mountain Dew in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Most knew her as a tenacious, hard-working, generous, strong-willed soul who never left a word unsaid. She had a unique way of connecting with people and saw the good in everyone.

She had a passion for caring for others. She spent much of her life dedicated to caring for the elderly. She was a collector of things. What the collection was just depended on the season of life she was in. Her treasures were many. Most would say, “they never met someone like Sherrie and likely never will again.” She was loved and held a special space in the hearts of those who knew her.

Sherrie had a relationship with Christ and her faith saw her through many aspects of life. She graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1983. She resided in Butler, MO and surrounding towns throughout her life.

At Sherrie’s request there will be no formal visitation or funeral. However, those who wish to pay tribute to her during a Celebration of Life are invited to do so. It will be held on Sunday, October 10th from 2PM – 4PM at Trent’s BBQ 720 E Walnut St, Rich Hill, MO 64779.

Cards and memorial contributions are all welcome. Please contact the Heuser Funeral Home for details.

I don’t think a relationship exists like the one my mother and I had. It was by no means a typical mother/daughter relationship, but it worked for us. My heart can rest easy knowing she is now at peace.

My mother taught me the meaning of how to hustle, be ambitious, and raised me to know no limits. She instilled limitless confidence in me. Because of her I approach life without self-doubt.

As an adult, I can recognize that we lived in poverty. But as a child, I had no clue. She was a provider and made sure my brother and I never went without and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we wanted and more. This is a testament to who she was as a person. She went without in order to be able to give to others.

Those who knew her – loved her. She made special connections with people. She was genuine and authentic. She did things her own way and was relentless in doing so. She did things to the max. You knew with her it was always going to be something. My mother did the best she could. And she gave her all.

Her life lasted 57 years but she left an impression that will last a lifetime. It’s time to hang up the gloves and rest easy, mom.

MoDOT News Release: Watch for wildlife movement on state roads

Watch for wildlife movement on state roads

Missouri ranks 15th in the country for potential vehicle/deer collisions

JEFFERSON CITY — It’s always exciting to see wildlife like deer and coyote when driving through rural Missouri—until they decide to jump into the road in front of your car. The Missouri Department of Transportation reminds motorists to be prepared for the sudden appearance of wild animals on Missouri roadways during the cooler fall months.

“As the days grow shorter, more motorists are driving on dark roads when deer are more active,” said Natalie Roark, state maintenance director. “This leads to a larger number of crashes involving deer and other wildlife from mid-October through the end of November.”

Fall is breeding season and deer are on the move. A report from State Farm Insurance ranks Missouri 15th in the country for potential deer collisions.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were 3,639 traffic crashes involving deer in 2020, resulting in 348 injuries and five deaths. Most deer strikes occurred at dawn and dusk in October and November.

Drivers should never swerve to avoid animals in the road as it can cause loss of control of their vehicles, resulting in serious injury or death. To avoid hitting a deer, always be cautious and keep your eyes scanning both sides of the roadway.

“Distracted driving—particularly when wildlife is on the move—can be deadly,” Roark said. “Always buckle up and put your phone down when driving.”

If you can’t avoid a collision and it has resulted in the death of the deer, there are several options you can take:

According to Missouri law, an individual who has struck and killed a deer with their vehicle may claim the deer carcass if written authorization to possess the deer is granted by a Missouri Department of Conservation agent.

The Wildlife Dispensation permit is free, but you need to contact the Missouri Department of Conservation to obtain the permit.

Do not jeopardize your safety to remove the animal in a high traffic area. Notify MoDOT at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (275-6636). Crews will address any deer/animal/debris on a highway that is a safety hazard, meaning that the carcass is in the driving or passing lane, or partially in either lane or on the shoulder. Crews will drag the carcass to the outer portion of the right of way, outside any active drainage ditch or channel.

If the deer is completely off the roadway, MoDOT will not pick it up unless it impedes mail delivery or is in a neighborhood, especially at or near a bus stop.

If a deer is located on the shoulder, MoDOT will address the deer during normal work hours. MoDOT crews will not be called out after hours to remove an item, unless it is a safety hazard. MoDOT does not have specialized crews assigned to remove dead animals from the roadway and does not contract out any roadkill removal.

Three Day Forecast

There will be more isolated to scattered showers, and possibly a few thunderstorms, across the area today, mainly during the afternoon hours.

The precipitation chances shift east for Thursday with dry weather and clearing skies returning for Friday.

Temperatures will be near normal today and Thursday with above normal temperatures heading into the weekend.
