Charlsie was born to Berneice Lorraine (Hager) and Charles Floyd Owens on June 29, 1937 in Windsor, Missouri at the Moffett Hospital.

Charlsie enjoyed a wonderful, happy childhood with her younger brother Ellis, at 305 N Washington in Clinton, Missouri. They fondly talked of summers spent at Grandma Hager’s farm outside Calhoun, on her 80 acres, which is now owned by Johnny Morris. They also recalled visiting Grandpa Owens in Windsor, and many trips visiting family in Sedalia. They loved going to the train depot there.

Charlsie was a lifelong resident of Clinton. When growing up the frequented the movie theaters, shopping on the square, and playing at Cowboy town.

When her father worked for the Kansas City Star, traveling, they took in boarders during the war. One of their boarders was formerly their neighbor, Minnie Philips, of whom they cared for very much. She continued to live with them for years.

Charlsie was fortunate enough to spend many precious years with her parents. They had resided at the same residence for over 50 years, married for over 60 years. Charlsie inherited her Dad’s love for cards and cats. From her mother – strength for life.

Charlsie had many close friends whom she cherished very much, many from school age. She enjoyed everything she did, except ironing! Her favorite color as everyone knows – yellow!

Her first job was gift wrapping at Nagel’s. She worked at Hodina’s Ladies wear, Hobson’s Furniture, was a teacher’s aide at Jefferson Park School, and retired from Walmart after 25 rewarding, happy years. She considered her manager Jane, a dear friend.

Charlsie attended Jefferson Park Elementary and graduated from Clinton High School in 1955, being voted “Best Looking” in her class. She attended Helen Templeton School of Cosmetology in Kansas City. Along with working at shops in Clinton she had a beauty shop in Calhoun, also.

She met “Bob” Robert Floyd Shoemaker, Jr. on a blind date, and from that meeting, a 45 year marriage transpired. They were married at the United Methodist Church on December 24th, 1955. The first couple to be married in the sanctuary.

Bob and Charlsie were blessed with two children, Robin Kelly and Robert Schyler, so proud of each one.

Charlsie loved to travel with her friends all across the U.S., and visiting Schyler and Kelly, and her family. She enjoyed gardening, she had beautiful flowerbeds. Charlsie belonged to UMC, Sorority Club, Jr. Progressive, many bridge Clubs, played MaJong, Canasta, Garden club, served as President of American Legion, a member of Rainbow, and Camp Fire Girls. She coached girls Softball, and was a Camp Fire Girls Leader.

Charlsie enjoyed going to the movies, going out to dinner with friends from work, The Birthday Club, and WD-40’s and family gatherings. Her and Bob enjoyed attending auctions, antiquing, and having booths at many flea markets.

Charlsie volunteered at the Samaritan Thrift Shop, thoroughly enjoying the comradery of friends, and being named “Volunteer of the Year”. She loved the Holidays, and couldn’t wait to see family at Christmas time.

She will be greatly missed by family and her bouquet of friends. Charlsie was a loving daughter, and sister, devoted wife, and the best mother a child could ever wish for to her children. Grandma Charlsie was so proud of her grandsons, Timothy and Travis, and great grandchildren Kenadie, Max, and London, who lovingly referred to her as “Nonnie”. Always encouraging, loving, giving her opinion, whether you liked it or not, true to her feelings. She was a best friend if you needed anything, or just to talk, you knew you could call on her, friends and family alike.

Charlsie spent the last years living at her son’s home on Truman Lake. Prior to that, she resided at Jefferson Gardens, after living on 8th Street for 38 years in her beloved house.

She loved watching the deer, turkeys, birds, with her buddies “Bandit” her Hero cat, and “Yogi” the dog. She always had treats ready for them, while she enjoyed her Werther’s. Living at Schyler and Nancy’s was like living at a Resort everyday.

Charlsie attended her 65th High School Reunion in October of ‘21, (after a year delay) and had a great time reminiscing. Another Fall of ‘21 highlight was attending the UMC Fall Picnic at the Wetzel’s farm. She had a wonderful time, cherished memories. Her Sunday School Class was very special to her.
