Two arrested for felony stealing in Bates County

On 4/24/2023 at approximately noon the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a property owner on CR 4286 in south west rural Butler, in reference to a possible burglary/theft in progress.

The property owner advised he had cameras on his property and had observed a Penske rental truck pull onto his property. He stated that last week a Uhaul type vehicle had been observed on the property and he believed that they were stealing metal from vehicle parts and tractor parts.

Deputies responded to the area and observed the Penske truck trying to leave the property. Deputies stopped the vehicle and made contact with a male and female. They initially tried to tell the deputies that they were mushroom hunting. A search of the vehicle revealed more than $750 worth of car and tractor parts.

The two were taken into custody at the scene. Evidence was collected and the parts were confirmed by the property owner that they came from the property.

Heather M Barracchini, 4/14/1979, of La Cygne Kansas was charged with felony stealing. Chester D Casida, 12/13/79, of La Cygne Kansas was charged with felony stealing.

Bond for both was set at $10,000 cash or surety on the stealing charges. As the investigation continued after the arrest, evidence showed that they entered a structure with the intent to steal and additional charges of Burglry are expected to be filed by the Prosecutor.'

“Twice this week we have seen Bonnie and Clyde’s working together to steal from hard working people. I know we have a lot of large mushrooms in Bates County but our deputies weren’t buying their story that they needed a box truck to hunt mushrooms.” Says Sheriff Anderson. “My message to people is just stop taking stuff that isn’t yours. I’m honestly thankful that our deputies have caught the last few thieves because this community is tired of people who steal and your safer when we catch you than if the property owner does.”
