The Butler Bears Varsity Baseball team took Tuesday’s game in dramatic fashion, with a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Sherwood Marksmen.
The game was tied at six with The Bears battling in the bottom of the eighth when Senior Zayn Carson singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. The Bears earned the victory despite allowing Sherwood to score five runs in the second inning.
The offensive firepower by Sherwood was led by Chancey Whitworth, Luke Swigart, Logan Mueller, and Jonah Kopriva, who all drove in runs.
Sherwood took an early lead in the second inning. Sherwood scored one run when Mueller singled. Sherwood evened things up at six in the top of the fifth inning, Garrett Swift drew a walk, scoring one run.
The Bears tallied three runs in the fourth inning. The Bears offense in the inning same from a single by Jake Chandler and Brandon Hammett, and a double by Junior Maddox Fennewald.
Freshman Brock Lines was on the hill for the Bears. The pitcher lasted two innings, allowing three hits and five runs while striking out two.
Swigart toes the rubber for Sherwood. The Marksmen lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs while striking out one and walking zero. James Ellison threw two-thirds of an inning in relief.
The Bears had 13 hits in the game. Chandler, Lines, and Eli Cox each managed multiple hits for the Bears. Lines and Chandler each collected three hits to lead the Bears.
Sherwood tallied five hits in the game. Mueller and Morgan Gage each collected multiple hits for Sherwood.
The Butler Bears move their record to 14-7 and will play tomorrow Wednesday May 17th at 4:30 p.m. at Cole Camp against the Warsaw Wildcats (16-10) in the 2nd round of district baseball play.
