Carol Lou Mullen, 81, of Peculiar, MO, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at her home with her family by her side. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Interment will follow in Wills Cemetery in Peculiar, MO.

Carol was born July 20, 1941 to Leslie Calvin and Mamie Ethel (Batson) Curnutt in Independence, MO. She grew up in Raytown, MO, graduating from Raytown High School with the Class of 1959. After high school, she earned her Associates of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Southwest Baptist University in 1961. She began working at Bendix on July 3, 1961, and this is where she met the love of her life, Glenn Mullen. They had their first date on Memorial Day weekend at the Branson Picture Show, and eventually married on September 21, 1963 at her parent's home in Raytown. They began building their new house in Peculiar, MO and moved in December 15, 1964. They picked Peculiar because it was halfway between Adrian, MO, where Glenn was from and Raytown, MO, where she was from.

During her life, Carol participated in and contributed to many things. She served as the Cass County Extension Homemakers President from 1980 -1982, Mo Extension Homemaker Associations NW District Director from 1980 - 1982, Cass County Extension Board Secretary, a member of the Get Together Homemakers Club from 1972 until her passing, and a member of First Baptist Church of Peculiar. Within First Baptist Church, she served as the secretary for 10 years, a Girls in Action Director, a Sunday School teacher to the 3rd and 4th graders, and church custodians with Glenn.

She worked as a grade school nurse's assistant at Peculiar Elementary and served as a home room mother for both children throughout their elementary days, but her greatest career was being a mom and a wife. In her free time, she enjoyed taking tule painting lessons and flower arranging classes. She enjoyed taking day trips with Glenn and their friends, including a trip to Europe in 1997 and an Alaskan Cruise with family in 2013. She loved watching dirt track car races with Glenn. In the off season, on Saturday nights, she could be found enjoying the country music at Big Creek Music Show in Pleasant Hill, MO.

Carol was truly a person who gave of her time to all her endeavors, but her true favorite past time was being with her family, first her children, then grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

Carol is preceded in death by husband, Glenn Mullen; her parents; brother, L. Melvin Curnutt; sister, Faye Lavery; and nephew, Jim Lavery. She is survived by her son, Kevin (Sheri) Mullen; her daughter, Patty (Troy) Beard; her nephew, John Mullen; her grandchildren: Heather (David) Orleman, Dustin (Crystal) Sanders, Jason (Diana) Beard, and Ashley (Blake) Hiza; her great-grandchildren: Caroline (fiance', Devin Bogaars) Neitch, Carter Orleman, Hunter Sanders, Preston Sanders, and Baby Boy Hiza expected in July 2023.
