Obituary - David L. Ullery

David L. Ullery, 77, of Freeman, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will be held 10:00am Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the Freeman Presbyterian Church, Freeman, Mo. Interment, with military honors, in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. The family will receive friends 6:-8:00pm Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. Contributions may be made the the Freeman Presbyterian Church.

David was born on September 1, 1946 in Kansas City, MO, a son of John Ellis and Melva Lucille (VanMeter) Ullery. He was a life-long Freeman resident and a 1964 graduate of Cass Midway High School, Cleveland, MO.

After graduation from high school, David worked for City National Bank in downtown Kansas City for a couple of years before joining the Army in 1966. He was stationed in Germany for most of his Army career, serving as a Chaplains Assistant, and was discharged in 1968.

David was a business accounting manager and worked at various car dealerships in the area, including Harvey’s of Harrisonville, Royal Chevrolet in Harrisonville and Harrisonville Auto Mall. He was very involved in his church and community. He had served as Fire Chief and was currently on the Board of the Dolan-West Dolan Fire Protection District. He had served as an officer in the Cass County Fire Chief’s Association, was a member of the Cass County Fire Fighters Association, and he was a life-long member, treasurer, music director and organist at the Freeman Presbyterian Church. As a U.S. Army Veteran, David was a life-long member of VFW Post #4409 and American Legion Post #42 in Harrisonville, and served as treasurer of both. He also led the Harrisonville Honor Guard. For many years, David was the “Voice of The Vikings,” proudly announcing all the Midway Vikings home football games. David was a board member and past president of the Freeman Community Club, and was the long-time announcer and past Grand Marshall of the annual Freeman Homecoming Parade. He enjoyed traveling in his R.V. all over the Midwest with his good friends and second family, Doug and Candy Bailey.

David was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucille Ullery. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Susan Ullery, Kansas City, MO; a niece, Karen Williams, and her husband, Brian, Kansas City, MO; cousins, Glendon (Mary Jane) Ullery, Lee’s Summit, MO, Wayne (Nancy) Ullery, Rock Hill, MO, and Linda Riehle, Raymore, MO; and many friends and neighbors.
