Police Pursuit in Bates County

At approximately 8:00pm this evening the Bates County Sheriffs Office received a call from a Trooper in reference to a Silver 4 door car traveling south around Passaic exit on I49 at 140mph.

Shortly after that call dispatch received a call from a motorist reporting a 4 door silver car traveling at high speeds and carelessly southbound on I49.

Deputies got behind the vehicle and attempted to stop it at the Butler 52 Highway exit. The vehicle continued to travel south until the 52 East/split road. The vehicle took gravel roads west bound and then headed back north. The vehicle then took Rice Road attempting to circle back into town. On RiceRoad/Cr1502 the vehicle met Sheriff Anderson’s patrol vehicle head on and was forced to drive into the ditch. As Sheriff Anderson was turning his vehicle around the car came to a stop.

Sheriff Anderson and a K-9 unit took the two subjects into custody. The passenger was subsequently released from the scene. The driver was taken to the Sheriff’s Office where a DRE Deputy screened the driver for driving under the influence of drugs.

The driver is being held pending formal charges of Driving under the influence of drugs, careless and imprudent driving, and felony fleeing to elude-dangerous pursuit.

“Working together with our partners to help keep our roadways safe is important to us. This whole incident could have ended different for people who he passed at those speeds, long before law enforcement tried to intervene.” Says Sheriff Anderson. “Just because you have a marijuana medical card does not give you the right to smoke marijuana and operate a motor vehicle. In Bates County, you are going to go to jail.”

According to MADD, every 37 seconds someone is killed from a drunk driver. Driving under the influence of marijuana is impaired driving just the same.
