Thorco Alumni, Family & Friends Reunion

Thorco Alumni, Family & Friends Reunion

The Thorco Alumni, Family & Friends Reunion will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Thiebaud Auditorium Meeting Rooms 105 E 11th S. Lamar Mo.

The invitation extends to all permanent and temporary associates, their friends and family. Special guest Ken Howard, former owner, will be recognized at the event. Please feel free to bring a snack to share, bottled water will be provided.

The event is being organized by Debra Probert, Dawna Holzbach is coordinating the snacks, Sandy Harris arranged for the meeting place and Nancy Williams will be helping with set up and cleanup. Please feel free to reach out to any of these individuals on the Thorco Associates Facebook group if you wish to volunteer to assist.

Thorco operated for 117 years in Lamar. Thorco began with a man named Frank Thorpe and a problem. Thorpe saw customers picking potatoes out of bins one at a time, an often dirty and time-consuming job so he came up with a solution. His first product was a wire potato scoop.

As Thorpe took to the railroad, selling his invention at stops in Barton County, his business grew. By 1930, it had outgrown its first facility, and the decision was made to move to a building at the corner of 18th and Gulf in Lamar. Frank Thorpe converted an old mill into a manufacturing facility.

But the growth did not stop there. In fact, steady growth occurred through 1965, with a two-year break from 1943 through 1945 due to World War 2. In the late 1960’s, the facility was purchased by Jim Allen and Ken Howard. This period would represent huge growth for the business they renamed into Thorco, as products for major national companies like Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Kroger and Gerber Baby Foods, as well as the United States Navy were developed.

In fact, so much growth would take place, the company would eventually expand to four facilities in southwest Missouri including Nevada, Butler, Cassville as well as the original plants in Lamar. At one point there was also some manufacturing in Canada and Mexico with total employment reaching 1,200 at one time.

A long-time associate Tom Day was quoted in the press when asked about his 45 years of working for the company, “it became like a second family. We were pretty close knit. A lot of people that went to work there worked for 20 years, or whatever.”

Just prior to the plant closing the doors permanently on September 30, 2016 the group held a farewell event at Thiebaud Auditorium. At this event former Plant Manager Debra Probert noted that the average years of service of the associates was 22 years, and there were associates with more than four decades of service.

Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Adrian Fire Department.

Chris grew up in his childhood home in Louisburg, KS, with his father, Tom, and mother, Dee. Chris attended Louisburg High School, graduating in 1997. He would go on to further his education at the Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he obtained his degree in Automotive Diesel Technology in 1999. Chris' mechanical passions eventually led him to a position with the Missouri Department of Transportation in 2005. His hard work, dedication, and strong work ethic earned him his current role as the equipment technician supervisor that he has held since 2013. Chris was incredibly dedicated and found it hard to take time off because there was always so much work to do. His creativity led to two innovations that were designed to protect and promote MODOT employee safety on the job. These innovations would go on to be adopted nationwide, also earning him the Missouri Governor's Award of Distinction.

In 2005, Chris met Shawna. The two united in marriage in 2007 and relocated to Adrian in May 2008, where they started their family by having two children, Callie Rose and Thomas Roy. He was a proud father and enjoyed watching his children grow into the people they are today. Chris enjoyed going on hunting and fishing trips with friends. He was an exceptional cook like his mother. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining for friends and family including his MODOT family. Over the years, Chris enjoyed volunteering his time and experience maintaining and upgrading the Adrian Fire Department's fleet. He was extremely proud to be a part of designing and outfitting the newest rescue truck. Although he was a mechanic by trade, he could also be found enjoying his passion alongside his best friend, Tyler, at "the Shop." Chris was an incredible husband, father, friend, and overall human being.

Chris is preceded in death by his mother, Dee Greving. He is survived by his wife, Shawna Zurn; daughter, Callie Zurn; son, Thomas Zurn; father, Thomas Greving, of Louisburg, KS; sister, Niki Greving (Troy Myers), of Ottawa, KS; sister, Kellie Joeckel, of Belton, MO; sister, Heather Sturm, of Belton, MO; and grandfather, Charles Zurn, of Kansas City, KS.

Obituary - Corey Alley

Corey Alley, 35, of Eldon, MO, departed from this world on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. He was an adventurous soul who embraced life with an unwavering spirit. He left behind a void that can never be filled. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Living Faith, 1121 SW Hook Rd, Lees Summit, MO 64082.

Corey was born on June 21, 1988, in Kansas City, MO, and grew up in the small town of Peculiar with his grandparents, Gary and Dorthy Peters. Corey was a man who lived life to the fullest. Even from a young age, he longed for adventure. He was always tinkering with something with such passion behind it.

Crazy Corrr - his love for the great outdoors was infectious. Whether he was casting a line into his favorite fishing spot, or sitting in the deer stand, his passion for nature was so apparent. His love for going fast, rock climbing, and scuba diving was what kept him living and loving life to the fullest.

At a young age, Corey started working as a sub-contractor for a railroad car refurbisher; this is where he found the love for welding. For several years, his love for welding grew and he decided to move on and start the next chapter of his life. In 2017, Corey decided that working and living at the Lake of the Ozarks was the life that he wanted. One of his life long dreams came true and he opened up A-1 Mobile Welding: Dock and Dive. Corey quickly had the lake memorized and did a ton of work for those on and around the lake. Not only was he known for the quality of his work, but he was also the only one at the lake who offered a lifetime warranty on all of the welds.

In the final year of Corey's life, he found his life partner, Karie. She brought a light to Corey's life that had never been seen before. They were able to share so many exciting life adventures and love together. Corey had no enemies. He was known as a fantastic teacher and friend. His uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way made it hard to not love him. He always enjoyed the simple things in life, like walking along a creekside with his dog, or setting up a hammock and falling asleep next to a fire.

Corey is survived by his father, Todd Alley; his mother, Kathy Ogletree; his grandfather, Gary Peters; the love of his life, Karie Place; his brother, Derek Ogletree; his sisters: Kara Ogletree and Haili Smith; as well as, many other family and friends.

Cass County Citizen’s Academy graduates!

We would like to congratulate the  Cass County Citizen’s Academy graduates!

They attended a class each week for eight weeks to learn about different responsibilities at the Sheriff’s Office. It was capped off with a ceremony last night. The Sheriff awarded them with a certificate and commemorative coin.

From everything to dispatch to court to the jail, this course has given them a sense of how we keep Cass County safe.

Now, they’re eligible to become members of the Cass County Sheriff's Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary allows the Sheriff's Office to extend services that it provides to the community without expanding the budget. This course will be available again in the spring.
