UPDATE: A 65-year-old man has died following a water rescue Friday in Miami County:

On January 12,2024 the Miami County Communications Center received a 911 call advising that two individuals had fallen into a pond, and their boat had overturned in the 25000 block of W. 215th Street, west of the Spring Hill. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the location while Dispatch remained on the phone with the reporting party.

While emergency personnel were responding, it was reported that one of the individuals were able to get to shore on their own. The other person was struggling, and at one time, the called was unable to see them in the water.

Miami County Emergency Medical Services, Johnson County Fire District 1, and Osawatomie Fire Department responded to the scene to assist with the call. Johnson County Fire District 1 members were able to pull the individual out of the water approximately 30-40 feet from the shore. EMS personnel preformed life-saving measures on him.

Both individuals were transported to the local area hospital. The individual who made it to shore was taken in stable condition, while the other individual was taken in critical condition. Both individuals were attempting to break the ice in the pond so that they could fix a fountain that had overturned when their boat tipped over, falling into the water. The reporting parathyroid witnessed the event and called 911 immediately.

The individual in stable condition was later released from the hospital. Michael A. Motta, 65, of Spring Hill, Kansas, the individual in critical condition, later died of his injuries.

We send our condolences to Mr. Motta’s family and other individuals during this difficult time. The cause of death remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office; however, foul play was not suspected.
