Lady bears advance in district basketball with a win tonight over Sherwood

Class 3 District play is under way! Butler Lady Bears traveled north to Adrian to take on the Sherwood Marksmen in district tournament play. The Bears come into the contest as the 4 seed, facing the 5 seeded Lady Marksmen. The winner of this game would move on to face the El Dorado Lady Bulldogs, the number one seed on the bracket, the loser would go home.

Butler would look to capture a repeat of the January 30th matchup where the Lady Bears were able to defeat the Lady Marksmen 49-41. Butler was sitting at 11-14, coming off a 58-42 win over Buffalo, while Sherwood is 8-18 off of a 38-37 victory over Warsaw.

The Bears, not ready for their season to come to an end, won the tip, and Carmichael drove to the basket to open the scoring. McCullogh would follow by converting and and-one basket to take a 3-2 lead. Carmichael wold answer back with a triple, taking back a 5-3 Bears lead. McCullogh would again knot it back it with a drive to the basket. 

Bears would begin to roll and take a 10-5 lead after a Clover three ball capping off a 7-0 Butler run. Sherwood would stop the run when Mouse got tp the line and knocked down a pair of free throws to pull back to a narrow deficit of 12-7. After Dubray hit a couple from the charity stripe, Fritts came up with a steal and a bucket on the way to a 6-0 Butler run that would force the Lady Marksmen to whistle for a time-out with the Bears on top 18-7. out of the time out, Fritts knocked down a corner 3 to push the run to 9-0. To stop the bleeding, Hill it a 3 ball for the Lady Marksmen. The Bears would end the quarter with a 26-10 lead.

To open the 2nd quarter, Carmichael would get fouled after hitting another deep ball, and convert the 4 point play which would spark an 11-0 run for the Bears. With just over a minute before halftime, Mouse would convert a traditional 3-point play for the Lady Marksmen to get their first score of the quarter. At the break, the Bears led the Marksmen 42-13.

The Bears looked to continue rolling out of the break, Fritts drilled her second shot from range in the game which to lead to an opening 5-0 run before McCullogh got back the line and sunk another pair as they ran out to a 10-0 run before Clover would burry a post bucket to answer for Butler. 

Hill buried yet another triple, to keep clawing at the Butler lead, going off for another run, this time it was a 7-0 Sherwood run. Despite Sherwood winning the quarter 17-13, the Bears took a 25 point advantage into the final quarter.

To begin the final round, the Bears were up 55-30. The Bears opened the quarter with Carmichael driving and grabbing a bucket. Despite a close final period that saw Sherwood outscore the Bears 14-11, the Bears had built up enough of a lead to walk away wit a 66-44 victory.

Carmichael led the scoring for the Lady Bears with 19 points, shooting 6 of 10 from the floor and grabbing 6 rebounds. Dubray had 15 and 5. The Bears had 8 players score in the game. McCulogh led all scoring with 20 and 6 boards.

The Lady Bears will face the number 1 seed El Dorado Springs lady Bulldogs on Wednesday.
