Notice from Bates County EMA

We plan on having our kickoff meeting at the Butler Masonic Lodge on North Orange on May 1st 2024. This will be the first of 3 meetings this year so we can go over wants and needs to be included in the 2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan, which will be prepared by the Kaysinger Basic RPC.

The 2nd meeting will be held in Rich Hill (in the Dome, we are planning), and the last meeting in Adrian, we are planning to use the Optimist Building. Please forward this to as many stakeholders you can, I will be sending several to various groups myself. -Dennis Jacobs, Director Bates County Emergency Management Agency

Dear stakeholders and residents of Bates County,
Every five years, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Management Agency requires Bates County to have an updated and approved Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. The purpose of this plan is to identify those natural hazards that have the greatest impact on life in Bates County, whether this is a tornado, wildfire, earthquake, floods, all possible hazards that could impact your daily lives. This plan seeks to update the previously approved hazard mitigation plan that was approved on May 13th, 2020.

The Hazard Mitigation Plan strives to assist the communities, school districts, townships, special road districts, and the public in becoming more resilient and establish effective mitigation strategies and actions that aid in reducing risk associated with natural hazards.
In collaboration with the Bates County Commission and the Bates County Emergency Management Agency, a kickoff planning meeting will be held May 1st at 10:00 AM at the Masonic Lodge (1203 N. Orange Street) in Butler.

At the kickoff meeting, we will discuss the natural hazards that can impact Bates County, explain how participation in the planning process works, and distribute the data collection questionnaires, with an explanation of how to fill them out fully, completely and accurately.

Due to the comprehensive nature of the planning process, we are encouraging the following individuals to help take part in this planning process: County Commissioners, City/Village Clerks or Administrators, School District Superintendents, Neighboring Communities (Drexel, Archie), County and Local Emergency Management Staff, Floodplain Management Personnel, General Public, Township Elected Officials, Special Road District Commissioners, First Responders, Major Employers, Transportation Officials (MoDOT), Electric Co-Ops, Public Works Officials, etc. Anyone is welcome to attend, even if you have never participated in a plan like this, this is a good opportunity to get involved in your community.

In order to receive any funding from FEMA after a disaster for mitigation projects, or in some cases before the disaster, participation in the Hazard Mitigation Plan is MANDATORY.

If you have any questions concerning the planning process before the first meeting, please feel free to contact me by phone at 660-885-3393 or by email at dharness@kaysinger.com and I would be happy to assist your entity in any way I can.

Humbly yours,
Dillon J. Harness
Regional Planner – Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission
