I have received several questions regarding Committeemen and women that will be on the ballot for the August Primary Election. There seems to be some confusion on the difference of Committee people and township boards.
Every township gets to elect one man and one woman to represent political parties. By statute they are elected in the Primary Election and they serve for 2 years. Once elected they will serve on the Central Committee of their political party.
Some of the responsibilities of Central Committee members is to represent the political party, they vote on party business and if there is a vacancy of an Elected Official they will recommend someone to the Governor for him to fill the vacancy until another election can be held.
Not everyone will have a committee person on their ballot. This is because nobody signed up to run in their township or only one person signed up. Committee members have absolutely nothing to do with your township road board.
Every township has a road board that consists of a Trustee, a Clerk and 2 board members. These positions are elected during the April election. Their next election will be in April of 2025. They also serve a 2 year term. Their main duties are to maintain the roads and ditches in their township. The township road board has absolutely nothing to do with the Committee people that serve on the political parties Central Committees.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion on what you will be voting for in August. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office either by phone or email. Our phone number is 660-679-3371.
