The Marksmen took first possession and drove all the way down into the redzone until the Bears defense finally showed up and forced Sherwood to turn the ball over on downs with a Brayden Jackson breaking a pass on 4th down.
Following Jackson’s and the Bears defensive stand, Butler put together their first drive, and capped it off with a 34 yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Kellen Long.
With just under 3 minutes to go in the half, Ferrel for the Marksmen would catch a 23 yard pass to put Sherwood on the board for the first time with a score of 8-6 in favor of your Bears. As both teams headed into the locker room, the Bears would hold a narrow advantage of 8-6.
Out of the intermission, the Bears looked quite a bit sharper in the 3rd quarter, putting together a 9 play drive that translated to points with Xavier Wisdom finding pay dirt with a 7 yard TD run to open the half.
Mainard answered back with a 19 yard touchdown pass from the hands of Kanzler. That TD would bring the score to 16-12 in favor of Butler.
Following a Bears punt, the Marksmen would begin to march downfield again, until Lucas Davison would force a fumble out of the fingers of Ferrell to give the Bears possession once again. The Bears would capitalize off of the turnover, with Wisdom once again finding the end zone with a 2 yard scamper. Heading into the 4th quarter, the Bears would find themselves up 22-12.
On their first drive of the final period, the Bears would continue to ride the wave of momentum and score off yet another touchdown run by the senior, Wisdom. That TD would put the Bears in a comfortable position, leading the Marksmen 28-12 with just under 8 minutes to go in the game. After the TD run by the Bears, the Marksmen would find the end zone after a 6 play drive to cut the deficit to 28-18.
Out of desperation, the Marksmen (now trailing by 10) would attempt an onside kick, and they would be successful. After the Bears had a called fumble recovery somehow overturned, Ferrel would find a way to cut into the Bears lead with a 6 yard TD run for the Marksmen.
With just 3:15 remaining, the Bears now only led 28-26. Sherwood was forced to attempt a second onside kick, but this time Long was able to come up with the football. The Bears now had the ball and the lead with just over 3 minutes to play. The Marksmen defense gave a big 29 yard run by Wisdom, which looked like it could help seal the deal for the Bears. However, a fumbled snap would gift possession back to the Marksmen.
The Marksmen would take the ball with just over 1 minute left, and trailing by 2. The Marksmen took their first lead of the game off of a TD run by Ferrell.
The Bears found themselves now trailing by 6 with around 20 seconds to play. However, there was a medical emergency that began to take place in the stands. And sometimes there are things happening that are more important than football and the Bears recognized that.
With the urgency and importance of the situation taking place off of the field, the Bears would opt to just not take another snap and ask the officials to allow the clock to run and the game to be completed. The final will go down as a 34-28 win for the Marksmen.
