Robert K. Getz, age 88, was born February 20, 1936, on the family farm in Buchanan County, near St. Joseph, Missouri. He was the son of Robert Lee and Dorothy (Douglas) Getz. Bob departed this life at his home, surrounded by his family on August 31, 2024.
Bob attended an elementary country school and graduated from Bolckow High School. During high school, Bob and Dorothy Roberts became friends, and following graduation, they were married on June 27, 1954, at the Bolckow Methodist Church. Bob worked for a furniture manufacturing company in Maryville for a short time before he and Dorothy moved to California. They decided to return to Missouri and settled in Appleton City where Bob interviewed for a position as driver for a newly based United Parcel Service hub and was immediately hired, becoming one of the first three UPS employees in Missouri. He proudly worked for UPS 34 years, retiring on December 24, 1997.
Following retirement, he was free to travel, but being hesitant to fly, Bob and Dorothy took many bus tours throughout the U.S. They also made many trips to the Branson area for camping, often taking the boat for fishing. Bob was a proud member of the Lunker’s Club there, holding a record for a 28-pound trout.
Bob loved yard work and gardening. He worked tirelessly to produce vegetables, many varieties of flowers and keeping the yard tidy and neat. He enjoyed sitting on his screened in porch, admiring his hard work and watching what happened in the neighborhood. Bob also enjoyed woodworking, making many items including ducks, spoon holders, cabinets and even a camper shed.
The greatest delight of Bob’s life was his grandchildren and step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. He felt they should be filled with candy, other treats, and as much love as possible. Bob’s greatest enjoyment was watching his great grandson Bryce grow and try new things. He always loved watching Bryce play sports, especially baseball. Bob always enjoyed giving Bre a hard time about changing her oil on her car. Later in life Bob enjoyed weekly outings with friends. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Preceding Bob in death were his son, Dennis Getz; a sister, Marjorie Praisewater; and two brothers-in law, Norman Roberts and Donald Roberts. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Getz; his children, Randy Getz and Tami Getz; his grandchildren: Alisha (Cory) Mantonya, Danielle Shuey, J.D. Getz, Derek (Victoria) Engeman, Gary Eaton, and Breana Getz; his great grandchildren: Bryce Eaton, Jaden, Stanton, Easton, Landon and Ellie Engeman, Questen and Kien Mantonya.
