Herrman’s Historical Happenings week of December 4

1871 James Baldwin, of Butler, purchased a large number of tree seedlings from Mr. Hutchins but wasn’t satisfied. Hutchins went to Baldwin’s farm to see what the problem was. Baldwin sics his dog on him, throws rocks and shoots at him.

1938 On this date, it is reported that nothing significant happened in the community of Athol.

1945 Dr. Smith meets with the city of Rich Hill city council over the proposition to build a hospital in Rich Hill. Blue Cross is pushing for a hospital in every town and Rich Hill should have one.

1961 For the second year, Butler Sophomore Ted Sweets is on the All-District football team. He had 34 touchdowns and 1,911 yards this year.

1989 Amoret Mayor Roy Miller  and fire chief Herschel Vail take delivery of their newly acquired fire truck. They are forming a rural fire district for a six mile radius of Amoret.

1993 The weather isn’t the best but the annual Butler Chamber Christmas parade is a dandy.  Winners are Adrian High School, Immanuel Baptist Church, the Bates County Museum, Casey’s store and Tiona Truck Line.

1998 This issue of the News-Xpress newspaper has an article by C.A. Moore with Charles Ernest “Bud” Clark and his experiences on Dec 7, 1941 when Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Clark was based a short distance from the harbor.
