ATTENTION: The City will be conducting a planned electrical outage on Thursday, January 16, to make repairs to our north substation.
The planned outage will take place at 11 p.m. on Thursday night and is scheduled to last about 2 hours.
Our hope is that doing the work late at night will cause as little disruption as possible in your daily routine. While we do understand that the weather has been cold in the recent weeks, staff have made sure to schedule the outage for the warmest night of the week, as temperatures should stay in the upper-to-mid 30s during the time of the outage.
A map is attached to this post to outline the areas that will be affected by the outage.
So why is this planned outage necessary?
During inspections of the substation, it was noticed that the arresters (surge protection) and grounding strap for the substation’s main transformer needed to be replaced. These pieces protect the transformer from becoming overloaded, which would cause the entire substation to lose power.
This will affect a large portion of our community, and we understand that some will not be happy with our timing. Please know that this work is essential to maintaining an efficient and effective power grid and hopefully limits the potential for a large-scale outage hitting the north side of town.
