Bates County Memorial Hospital honored its dedicated volunteers at the annual Auxiliary Recognition Banquet on April 24, celebrating the individuals who give their time and talents in support of the hospital’s mission.
The event included a brief business meeting, during which the Auxiliary voted to contribute $25,000 to the hospital for its 2025 donation. Details on how the funds will be used will be announced at a later date.
A highlight of the afternoon was the announcement of the 2025 Volunteer of the Year, Carol Lewis. Carol retired from BCMH in 2020 after 32 years of service and returned as a volunteer in 2021. She has played a vital role in improving the Gift Shop’s financial operations and is a trusted resource for her fellow volunteers. Carol was presented with a plaque, certificate, and a decorative clock by BCMH CEO Greg Weaver and HR Director Kristina Anderson.
Three retirees were also recognized for their years of volunteer service: Liz Schlechty, Beverly Wainwright, and Kathleen Bunch. Family members joined the celebration, and Kathleen’s longtime friend, Dee Hall, proudly stood by her side as her “representative sister.”
Kristina Anderson, Director of Human Resources, offered heartfelt reflections on each retiree’s unique contributions. Speaking of Kathleen Bunch, she shared, “Giving has a way of multiplying itself. And Kathy’s gift of time—nearly 4,900 hours—represents far more than just numbers. It reflects the friendships formed, the kindness shared, and the spirit of service she brought to everything she did.”
Volunteers were recognized individually with a service pin and certificate, and their annual and lifetime hours were shared with the group. Each received a beautiful hanging flower basket as a token of appreciation.
A delicious homemade lunch added to the celebration, featuring barbecue brisket, turkey, pork, and beans prepared by Rob Clover, Director of Plant Operations, with sides provided by the hospital’s Nutrition Services.
