Bates County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) has named Carol Lewis as its 2025 Volunteer of the Year, recognizing her dedication, leadership, and service to the hospital and its Auxiliary.
Carol began volunteering in June 2021, shortly after retiring from BCMH in 2020 with 32 years of service. During her career, she worked in Medical Records before serving as the hospital’s Director of Quality and Risk. In retirement, she returned to give back to the organization she served for so many years.
Carol took on the role of treasurer for the BCMH Auxiliary Gift Shop, succeeding longtime volunteer Alan Mundey. She later assumed bookkeeping responsibilities for the Auxiliary’s general budget as well. Drawing on her experience managing books for her family farm, she applied strong organizational and financial skills that helped improve the Gift Shop’s operations and profitability.
Carol has devoted countless hours to her volunteer work. Early on, she implemented a new inventory system and partnered with hospital staff to train others on the Gift Shop’s cash register and technology. Known for her clear communication and attention to detail, she provides quarterly financial updates that help Auxiliary members make sound decisions in support of the hospital.
Her continued service is a testament to the impact that dedicated volunteers can have—not just within hospital walls, but across the broader community.
