A word of caution from the LaCygne police department

Within the past week, La Cygne Animal Control has responded to two raccoons exhibiting symptoms consistent with Canine Distemper (not transmittable to humans). Cases of such are common and tend to rise in spring and early fall, making this a timely reminder for pet owners to update vaccinations as the virus spreads through airborne exposure (coughing and sneezing) and by sharing food and water bowls.

What You Can Do:
Vaccinate your pets. Keeping up with your pet’s vaccinations is the most effective way to prevent infection.
Report sick or strangely behaving wildlife, which appear disoriented or unsteady in their movements, with discharge from their eyes and nose, and do not approach them. Contact La Cygne Animal Control for assistance, 913-757-2144.
Avoid contact between your pets and wild animals. Keep dogs on leashes and supervise outdoor time, especially near wooded areas.
