At most, 1 in 10 million

Alan Nieder, owner of Heartland Hatchery near Amsterdam during his normal hatching routine, discovered this four-legged Buff Brahma chick on Friday which otherwise appears to be quite healthy.

The odds of a chicken being born with four legs are approximately 1 in 10 million, a result of a rare genetic condition called polymelia, where an extra limb develops due to a congenital malformation. This condition can affect various species, but it is particularly rare in birds.
