Cody Johnson in the running for Bates County Prosecuting Attorney

Cody L. Johnson has filed to run for the office of Bates County Prosecuting Attorney. Cody graduated with honors from Avila University with a bachelor’s degree in criminology/criminal justice. In 2017, he graduated with honors from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, OH. He passed the Bar exam that same summer and began his law career as a Public Defender out of the Harrisonville District 17 office, serving Johnson, Cass, Bates, Henry and St. Clair Counties.

After several years with the public defender’s office, he accepted an associate position with a small, private law firm, becoming a federally licensed attorney for the Western District of Missouri during that time. In 2021, Cody married his wife, Rachael (Overbey), of Adrian, MO. In May of 2024, Cody joined the Bates County Prosecutor’s office as the assistant prosecutor, alongside Hugh Jenkins and team. Cody also serves as the 27th Judicial Circuit child support prosecutor, covering Bates, St. Clair, and Henry Counties.

When not in court, Cody enjoys playing video games, fishing, and competing in Strongman Competitions. If elected as Bates County Prosecutor, Cody hopes to restore faith in the justice system one day at a time.
