Report from the Bates County Commission: "Townships are pointless"

January 21, 2026 The Bates County Commission met with Presiding Commissioner Jim Wheatley, Northern Commissioner John Gray and Southern Commissioner Trent Nelson present.

Zachary Ball met with the Commissioners to discuss a speeding issue by his place of residence. Zachary stated that he has been on leave from his work for personal reasons since December and he has noticed the traffic is becoming even more of an issue than before. He explained that he has come close to being struck by an estimated twenty vehicles while trying to retrieve his mail. He even stated that some of the vehicles have swerved at him while at the mailbox.
Zachary told the Commission that the speeding traffic begins around lunchtime and keeps on until midnight. He is concerned about his children and animals that play in the yard. He confirmed that he has called the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and claims that they have done nothing to see to this issue. He said that he has not seen a patrol car on this road in over five years and thinks they should be more attentive and respond to these types of issues and concerns.
Zachary said that two of the main drivers that speed through are Alex (Arlie) Jessup and John Hill.
While speaking with the Commission Zachary told them that the Mount Pleasant Township has been doing nothing and thinks the townships are pointless. His road is terrible, he claimed, and needs graded. John gave him a copy of Township Members that he needed to contact and told him that he would talk to the BCSO to get a bug in their ear. Trent told him that it would be a good idea to put up a camera that way they can have video proof of the reckless driving and any other issues he might have.
Zachary asked about a speed limit sign being put up, but the Commission said that was not likely to happen.
John made a motion to approve the Senior Services Board/Senior Center Budget. Trent seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion carried. No opposition.
