Born on July 28, 1946, in Dresden, MO, to Stanley Woodward, Sr and Jessie (Burton) Woodward, Jim dedicated his life to service, family, and the joy of recreation. At the young age of 17, Jim enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a journey of service that reflected his strength of character for the rest of his life. During his military career, he earned several meritorious awards, including the Bronze Star in 1969, only six years after entering the Army - a testament to the bravery, dedication, and leadership he demonstrated early in his service. Through years of commitment and respect from those who served alongside him, he ultimately achieved the distinguished rank of Sergeant Major, one of the highest enlisted honors in the United States Army.
In 1975, while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with the legendary 82nd Airborne Division, he completed his Jumpmaster certification, further demonstrating his commitment to excellence and to the soldiers he led. His military career reflected courage, discipline, and an unwavering sense of duty to his country and to those under his command. After his honorable discharge in 1987, Jim transitioned to civilian life, which included finding joy in his hobbies, particularly working on antique clocks and enjoying a round of golf when time permitted.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Woodward, of the home; his son, James Woodward II, of New River, Arizona; his step-children: Christopher (Valarie) Doyel of Lee's Summit, MO; and Rhonda (Duane) Woolsey of Harrisonville, MO; six beloved grandchildren; three cherished great-grandchildren; and a brother.
