Late Spring storm packs unexpected punch


SNARLED This scene on Pine street in Butler depicted a common sight around town following a storm Friday evening that left many without power, holes in roofs and other significant damage. 

 
 As forecasters predicted winds of up to 50 mph, it appears that number could have been close to twice that much in parts of Butler and to the east of town. Along with it, pea to nickel sized hail, giving an almost Winter time appearance along with fog due to warm ground covered with ice pellets.
  The above photo by Janet Wason gives a sampling of the ground cover, which piles of hail were still visible an shaded areas into Sunday morning.
  The lack of electricity also remained an issue into Sunday as crews in Butler scrambled make repairs related to downed power lines, resulting in many piles of brush along with plenty of other cleanup to be done over the coming weeks.
   Fortunately, no injuries were reported however, first responder crews were called to assist with generators for those with medical needs along with other medical related calls.

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson donned his boots and chainsaw to help with cleanup efforts around Butler that lasted well through the weekend following the intense storm that hit the area on Friday evening.
