Road grading skills come into question

Reports from the Bates County Commission

April 27, 2026 The Bates County Commission met with Presiding Commissioner Jim Wheatley, Northern Commissioner John Gray and Southern Commissioner Trent Nelson present.
Eddie Hedrick came in and spoke with the Commission about Dakota Street in Mt. Pleasant Township.
He explained the road conditions and expressed his concerns. Trent told him that John and himself kind of share Mt. Pleasant and are more than happy to make sure something gets done. John told him that he was going to call the new board member and the trustee to inform them of such issues.
Eddie claimed that there isn’t someone on the township board that can grade a road and they always want to wait until it’s too dry. Trent and him agreed that you cannot grade a dry road, you need to do it shortly after it rains and it also needs to have a ditch and a crown for it to be done correctly.
Trent told him that he would go look at it once he was finished with looking through bills and would get ahold of Bill and his crew and see if they could do something until the township could permanently fix it.
Robert Rosendahl came in and expressed concern about a road North of Hume, on V Highway. There is a culvert that seems to be getting washed out and is caving in.
Trent told him that he would go and look at it after work.
Trent made a motion to put out another bid sheet for more pipe. John seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion carried. No opposition.
West Pipe, Metal Culverts Inc., Viebrock and Welborn Sales came and met the Commission about the Bid Opening for Culverts. Jim read off the Bid Sheets as the others followed along. Bill Stephan was in to oversee and made some corrections on the new bid sheet that will be sent out.
Welborn Sales won the bid.
Barry Matchett and Josh Framel, with Clearway, came in and expressed their excitement for the Solar Meeting. Before they got into any detail, Jim stopped and asked about legal counsel being on the phone and felt like it needed to be a closed session. John agreed that since there was legal counsel on the phone and the things that were going to be discussed, going into closed session was the best option.
John then made a motion to go into closed session at 2:42 p.m. per RSMo 610.021(1). Trent seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion carried. At 4:28 p.m. Trent made the motion to go back into open session. John seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion carried.
