We have recently received questions and concerns regarding the use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) within our community. Below are some important reminders about Missouri law and safe operation:
E-bikes with operable pedals and an electric motor under 750 watts are generally legal to ride in Missouri.
If an electric bicycle exceeds 750 watts, or is capable of speeds beyond what is allowed for an e-bike class 1 &2 20 mph, Class 3 28 mph, it is classified as a motor vehicle and at minimum requires a valid drivers license.
Bicycles and e-bikes are not permitted to be operated on sidewalks within the city.
Bicycle and e-bike operators must obey the rules of the road just like any other vehicle, including:
• Stopping at stop signs and traffic signals
• Yielding when required
• Using proper hand signals for turns
• Riding in the correct direction of travel
Class 3 e-bikes (pedal-assist up to 28 MPH) may only be operated by individuals 16 years of age or older and must be equipped with a speedometer.
Whether you ride a bicycle or an e-bike, please do so responsibly and safely. Following these rules helps keep everyone on our streets safe.
