Herrman’s Historical Happenings week of August 26
1719 M. DeTissenet, the first caucasion to set foot in what will be Bates Co, meets & names the Osage Indians for the river they live near.
1858 The steamboat "United States Mail" from St. Louis, comes to Papinville.
1874 Because of chinch bugs, the drought, & the grasshoppers, the Butler Fair Association decides not to hold a fair this Fall.
1878 A number of Bates Co water wells are trying up.
1963 The Butler Fall Festival opens for two days at the fairgrounds.
1978 Appreciation Day is held at Paradise Donut Shop, 205 N. Main, Butler. The store is under new ownership by Steve, Wilma and Kim Clift.
1983 Dr. A.L. Hansen, aged 82 and Jessie Wishard, age 81, both of Butler, die when Dr. Hansen's plane crashes near Haines, Alaska.
1986 The body of 17 year old Tammy Stump, formerly of Butler, is found in Nevada. 36 year old Robert Bush of El Dorado Springs, MO is charged with the crime.
1989 Butler's newest industry, Creative Home Parties, hosts an open house at their plant in Butler's industrial park.
