Slight time schedule change for Butler schools next year...

In an effort to accommodate some emerging factors that affect our students, a start time adjustment of 20 minutes was proposed at the high school campus. This will move the start time at the high school from 8:10 to 7:50 and the end time from 3:17 to 2:55. The elementary school will see little to no change. The mitigating factors that are new to our district include a new athletic and academic conference that has added several schools requiring substantial travel time. An earlier school dismissal means a decrease in instances requiring students to be pulled out of their final class period to board a bus for an activity trip, thus protecting hours of instructional time. Our vocational technical students have seen a change in their schedule at the Nevada campus. Butler’s time shift will not only accommodate our obligation to provide lunch for these students but also guarantee they receive the full curriculum our tuition is paying for. Several alternatives were explored before deciding on this small time adjustment.

This new schedule will go into effect for the 2011-2012 school year.

Arrest made in McBee's break in

In the early morning hours of May 11th, McBee's General Store in Amsterdam, MO was broken into. It appeared that a vehicle had been used to make entry into the front of the building by driving though the front wall. Once this occurred the burglary alarm was activated. A Bates County Deputy arrived while the suspect was still on the scene. The suspect then fled in a vehicle from the Deputy which led to a high speed chase into Kansas. Once in Kansas the suspect fled his vehicle on foot. Deputies recovered stolen items from McBee’s General Store inside the suspect vehicle.

Multiple law enforcement agencies consisting of Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Butler Police Department, Linn County Kansas Sheriff’s Office, Miami County Kansas Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol began a hunt for the suspect. During the investigation it was also discovered that a 2004 Black Chevrolet Truck 4 door 2500 had been stolen and was used to drive into McBee’s General Store. The vehicle was located and returned to the registered owner. Due to the multiple agencies diligence the suspect was located and arrested in Kansas. The suspect was identified as Michael L. McDonald, 30, from Paola, Kansas.
