Hospital Auxiliary gives $10,000 in scholarships

For the 2011-2012 school year, the Bates County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary selected ten individuals to each receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Recipients include:

Obituary - Roy Boyles

Graveside services for Roy Boyles will be 3 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2011 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri with Chaplain Michael Campbell officiating. There is no visitation. Contributions to Crossroads Hospice. Services are under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri.

Clarence Leroy “Roy” Boyles, age 73 of Adrian, Missouri died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at his home in Adrian. He was born October 20, 1937 to Clarence Riley and Juanita Bell Dotson Boyles in Butler, Missouri.


Roy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Louise Boyles of Adrian, Missouri; two sons, Johnnie Lee Boyles and wife Yvette of Adrian, Missouri and Larry Ray Boyles and wife Sherry of Archie, Missouri; six sisters, Norma Fancher and husband Ed of Nevada, Missouri, Judy McCanles and husband Marvin of Leeton, Missouri, Debbie Barber and husband Mike of Appleton City, Missouri, Linda Radford and husband Mike and Terry Rhodes all of Clinton, Missouri and Kathy Hunter of Calhoun, Missouri; 10 grandchildren and several others Roy helped raise; and several great-grandchildren, including one great-grandchild due in December. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clifford and James Boyles.

WMATMA 33rd Annual Steam and Gas Engine Show coming in June


It's three full days of steam engines, tractors, implements and more at the 33rd annual Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association show set for June 24th through 26th. This year's featured tractor will be the Ford, Fordson and related equipment co-featuring all brands of lawn and garden tractors.

The Frontier Village center will be open all three days for breakfast and lunch each day. Here's a look at the schedule:



Friday:
Antique tractor pull - 6:30 p.m.

Saturday:
"Parade of Power"- at 12:10 p.m.
Kids games - 2:30 p.m.
Antique tractor pull - 6:30 p.m.
Also see two man log sawing, bale throwing, blind man tractor drive and slow tractor racing...

Sunday:
Church services - 8:00 a.m.
Kids pedal tractor pull - 1:30 p.m.
Antique tractor pull 3:00 p.m.

South Prairie Railroad will be open for all ages to take a ride.
Primitive camping available on the grounds for $6.
Anvil shoot at noon each day.

Sheriff's Posse gearing up for Ultimate Horsemen's Challenge

As a 'kick off' event for the Bates County Fair, the Bates County Sheriff's Posse is hosting the Ultimate Horsemen's Challenge which will feature 2010 EXCA World Champion Josh Rushing. The competition starts at 9 a.m. on July 9th at the fairgrounds.

The UHCA and EXCA sanctioned event will have a 60% payback along with trophies, prizes and ribbons awarded:


It's free to spectators and is great family entertainment- currently more than 75 contestants will be participating. More info can be found on the Ultimate Horsemen's Challenge web site.

Postal Service food drive nets over 1,400 lbs of canned goods

The Butler Post office and area letter carriers would like to extend a thank you to all those who donated items in the Saturday food drive. Letter carriers picked up over 1,400 pounds of canned goods from area residents to stock the shelves of the Butler Community Food Pantry.

Another drive is in the works and will be announced at a later date.

Strauch does well in State Golf Tournament

Congratulations to Joe Strauch who gave a valiant effort at River Cut Golf Course in the State Golf Championships in Springfield, Mo. In the two days of the tournament, Joe shot an impressive 82 & 91 with a final score of 173, to place him 47th out of 91 players in Class 2 from all over the state of Missouri. 

Quite an accomplishment for his 1st time at State- congrats again to Joe for making Butler proud.
