Obituary - Eartus Carter

Eartus Earsel "Ernie" Carter, 88, Adrian, MO, died Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Adrian Manor in Adrian. Graveside services will be held Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ernie Carter Memorial Fund, c/o Atkinson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Adrian, MO 64720.

Eartus was born near Parthenon, Arkansas on December 29, 1922, the son of Chester and Bessie (Smith) Carter. Eartus had three brothers, Kenneth, Herbert and Leroy. He spent his childhood and school days on Jasper Mountain.
After finishing high school Eartus went into the Army from February 26, 1943 - January 22, 1946. During this time he learned to box, barbered and helped build Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland. After serving his country, he attended Arkansas Tech for two years. Soon after, he met and married Vera Crathers. They had two sons, Phillip and Gary. These boys were the light of his life and everything he fought for.

He went through a divorce in 1968; then re-married Norma Bent in 1982-1986. He spent his life working on automobiles for dealerships and in his own personal shop. He also spent one year as sheriff for Adrian. He spent many years in Adrian and later Osceola, MO. He loved to play guitar and the harmonica, loved to dance and go to auctions.

Due to failing health, Eartus lived with his son and daughter-in-law in Blue Springs, MO for the last five years. He was preceded in death by his parents and all brothers. He is survived by two married sons, Phillip Carter and Sandra Carter of Blue Springs, MO and Gary Carter and Laurie Carter of Adrian, MO; 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

Serious injuries in accident near Amsterdam

John K. O'Connor, 45, of Amsterdam was airlifted to Research Hospital with serious injuries following an accident at the intersection of county roads 9002 and 11001 just before noon today. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the 1991 Oldsmobile driven by O'Connor collided at the intersection with a 1993 Chevrolet driven by Deandra E. Boggs, 31, also of Amsterdam. Boggs was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment with moderate injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. The intersection of CR9002 and CR11001 is 'uncontrolled', meaning there are no stop signs for any direction of traffic.

Accident at 71 and 18 highway- at least one injured

Bates County EMS and first responders are heading to a two vehicle accident near the South 71 ramp and 18 highway, where initial reports are that at least one person, possibly a highway construction worker, is injured. Use extreme caution if traveling through the area.

Update 2:13 p.m. - First responders at the scene are reporting there were no injuries in the accident.

4-H'ers qualify for state livestock judging

Bates County 4-H held its annual livestock judging contest on Thursday, June 16, at the Bates County Fairgrounds. Al Decker, Bates County Livestock Specialist, reports that fifteen 4-H’ers participated in this event with the results as follows:

Senior Division qualifying for state competition: (1st) Maggie Massey, Summit 4-H; (2nd) Colt Cumpton, Altona 4-H; and (3rd) Tristen Clark, Ballard 4-H.

Junior Division qualifying for state competition: (1st) Mike Tarvin, Summit 4-H; (2nd) Reba Colin, Hudson Hustlers 4-H; (3rd); Clint Cumpton, Altona 4-H; and (4th) John Tarvin, Summit 4-H. Other juniors competing were Morgan Bradley, Summit 4-H; Clay Cumpton, Altona 4-H; Riley Mareth, Summit 4-H; Kenton Taylor, Summit 4-H; Tevin Taylor, Summit 4-H; David Warfield, Jr.; Hanna Webb, Summit 4-H; and Autumn West, Summit 4-H.

According to Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth Specialist, the State 4-H Livestock Judging contest will be held on Saturday, September 10, in Columbia.

Reported head-on collision near Amsterdam

Authorities and first responders are in route to a reported head-on collision with injuries at the intersection of country roads 11001 and 9002, east of Amsterdam.

Update 12:02 p.m. - First responders are reporting various injuries to a male and a female, which are being transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital shortly.
