Lots of fun for local 4-H'ers at T-Bones game

Approximately 100 Missouri and Kansas 4-H members and their parents attended the second annual “4-H with the T-Bones Night” at Community America stadium in Kansas City, KS on Saturday evening June 18. According to Alan J. Mundey, Bates County 4-H Youth specialist, activities at the ballpark included a pre-game parade on the field for all 4-H members and families; meeting Sizzle the T-Bones mascot; eating $1 hot dogs; watching the T-Bones take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes; and enjoying a spectacular fireworks display provided by Verizon. This event was organized with the cooperation of Missouri 4-H youth specialists and the T-Bones baseball organization.

Poplar Heights Farm Festival improves with age...

The Poplar Heights Farm northeast of Butler provided another opportunity to see life in the past this weekend. From horse drawn carriages to blacksmithing, basket weaving, milking cows by hand- everyone, young and old, enjoyed a 'hands on' experience.

The annual festival, now permanently scheduled on Fathers Day weekend, is expected grow with each and every event. In fact, in just a few months plan on attending the heritage foods festival at the farm, where you'll get a much closer look at the handling and preparation of food as it was done well over a century ago.

In the works for next year include a day camp for children, where kids can learn the many aspects of farm life.

Bates County Live will continue to follow the progress of the Poplar Heights Farm and will publish more info about upcoming events in the near future.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Bates County

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Bates County in effect until 10 p.m.

Current radar shows a line of heavy thunderstorms  that extends from Archie towards Creighton, which is reported to be producing golf ball size hail.

A smaller group of thunderstorms is making its way towards Bates County from the southwest and are expected to arrive within the next hour or so.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch to be in effect until 2 a.m. tomorrow morning. Here's the latest forecast:

Rest of Tonight
Mostly cloudy. Showers...thunderstorms likely in the evening...then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some thunderstorms may be severe in the evening. Lows around 70. South winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.

Overnight storms had more bark than bite

Just after midnight this morning, a large thunderstorm that spanned from Bates County to north Kansas City rolled through the area that threatened large hail and high winds. While hail size ranged from pea to nickel size, high strait line winds toppled trees and left area streets littered with leaves and twigs. In the rural areas, some barns and sheds were stripped of their tin.

Areas hardest hit appear to be in the northernmost part of the county including Adrian and Drexel. Fortunately, the heaviest damage reported was a tree on a car and downed power line, both in Adrian.

The highest wind speed recorded in the county was 74 mph in Adrian.

Tonight's forecast calls for some thundershowers after midnight, but it won't be an encore performance of last night, according to the latest forecast.
