Senator David Pearce Receives 2011 Legislative Award
![]() |
State Senator David Pearce |
On Friday, June 17, the St. Louis Business Journal hosted the 2011 Legislative Awards Breakfast, to recognize legislators that played a part in advancing legislation positive for St. Louis and the surrounding area during the recent session.
“I am honored to receive this award. The honor that this award represents is not lost on me,” said Sen. Pearce. “I recognize that, even though I am not an elected official of the St. Louis area, the legislation that I sponsor and handle is beneficial across the state.”
This year marks the 10th year that the St. Louis Business Journal has been giving the Legislative Award. Senator Pearce handled House Bill 163 in the Senate, the measure that extended federal unemployment benefits in Missouri from 79 weeks to 99 weeks and reduced Missouri’s share of unemployment benefits, saving businesses more than $100 million a year. Also, a number of the bills sponsored by Sen. Pearce this session dealt directly with K-12 and higher education.
“As an advocate of education in the Senate, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to be a part of legislation that will improve education across our state,” Sen. Pearce said. “A world class education for Missouri students allows our state to keep pace on a national and global economic level.”
This is the third year that Sen. Pearce has been awarded this honor.

4-H’ers Compete at Fashion Revue
Corrected Fashion Revue press release: Brianne Popplewell was mistakenly omitted from the previous press release. Our apologies!
Thirteen young ladies took to the runway in the annual Bates County 4-H Fashion Revue and show held on June 13, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Butler. The 4-H members modeled fashions ranging from pajamas to formal wear.
According to Bates County 4-H Youth Specialist Alan J. Mundey, winners in the event will compete at the State Fashion Revue in Columbia in September. In the junior division (ages 8-10) of Clothes You Make, Aubrey Terry (County Line 4-H), received top honors. Ella Armentrout (County Line 4-H) will represent Bates County at the state event in the Clothes You Make intermediate division (ages 11-13) and Erin Armentrout (County Line 4-H) takes the state stage in the senior division (ages 14 and older) of Clothes You Make.
State qualifiers in the Clothes You Buy category are intermediate division winner Katie Kostuke (All American 4-H) and senior division winner Jaclyn Crawford (Amsterdam 4-H).
Brooklyn Popplewell (V-52 4-H) will model her outfit in the Crochet category at the state event.
Other blue ribbon winners participating were Brianne Popplewell, Bethanie Cole, Shaylee Terry, Katie Murrell, Tiffany Newkirk, Megan Sutcliffe, and Victoria Newkirk.
During the Fashion Revue show, Kris Jenkins, retiring Extension Specialist, was honored for her contributions to 4-H and Fashion Revue. Battle of Island Mound tour draws crowd despite heat
A crowd of about 70 people gathered Saturday morning at the Bates County Museum to learn about the most recent findings of the archaeological survey being conducted at the Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site. The day’s event began with viewing artifacts and learning how they are cleaned, cataloged, and processed. The visitors came from as far away as Leavenworth, Kansas City, Belton/Raymore, Lee’s Summit, and Nevada. Four siblings who attended are direct descendants of Rufus Vann, a member of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. Ron Toothman also attended but he has yet to find a direct link to Enoch & Christiana Toothman whose farm was commandeered by the 1st KCVI in 1862.
Following the presentation, the group traveled by caravan to the site. Speakers at the site included State Parks Deputy Director, Jim Reinard and Archaeologist, Ann Raab. Mr. Reinard detailed the battle that occurred in October 1862 and Ann Raab discussed the specifics of the dig site.
Visitors then mingled with the archaeologists as they continued working in various ‘pits’. The work witnessed is tedious and precise. New to the site is a sign designating the area as, “The Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site – Planned for official opening in the fall of 2012.”
