The Adrian Boy Scout troop will be providing a retiring flag retiring ceremony on August 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bates County Elks Lodge in Butler.

The American Flag is a symbol of patriotism and pride. Once a flag becomes faded and tattered, it should be retired (thus destroyed) by the approved manner of burning. This is considered to be the most respectful method to retire a flag.

Your opinion needed regarding our Butler Community Food Pantry...

We are conducting a poll to get the public's opinion for a small county tax to support the food pantry. There is also consideration of starting a Thrift shop as well, which will be called Community Charity. The profits from this Thrift will 100% be funneled back into Bates County Charities. Both are to be run by an Executive Board. The amount of the tax would be keep small, like possibly--say .15 % or .25% per $1,000. of property assessment. With this in mind, please participate in our poll located on the top right of our home page.

We also would be interested in knowing if you support the idea, how much of a tax would you be willing to pay? Your thoughts may be emailed to us at bateswire@hotmail.com

Complete results of the survey will be published around July 15th. Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Rental property in Butler celebrates savings for multi-family housing complex

In a ceremony on Thursday, June 23, 2011, Pam Anglin, USDA Rural Development Missouri Housing Program Director, presented a certificate of congratulations to the Board of Directors of Butler Rural Housing Corporation  to celebrate the reamortization of their loans. The property, which consists of 80 one bedroom apartments, was originally constructed with funds from the United States Department of Agriculture. The apartments were originally constructed in two phases, from 1976 to 1978. The interest rates of the original loans ranged from 8.125% to 8.5%

The board requested approval to reamortize their unpaid balances specifically to reduce the interest rate and to reduce their loan payments. Their request was approved by USDA and the loans were reamortized.

The reamortization resulted in a reduced payment to Rural Development (savings of $13,249 per year) and reduced government subsidy to the property due to the decreased interest rate. The note rents were reduced which caused the rent amount to decrease for many of the tenants. The maximum note rent now is $365 with utilities included.

“I am happy to celebrate the reamortization of the loans for the Butler Rural Housing Corporation,“ said Anita J. Dunning, Missouri State Director for USDA Rural Development. “The lower interest rates will help keep the rental rates affordable for our tenants by reducing the mortgage payments on the rental complex.” Earl Van Slyke, Board President of Butler Rural Housing Corporation, was presented a door mat for the front door and a certificate of congratulations from USDA Rural Development. Also present was Mike Landers, Vice President of Bell Management, who manages the day-to-day operations of the complex.

Affordable rental property in rural areas is an important part of any rural area. Apartment living can be an alternative for many people who cannot afford the purchase price of a home or may not be able to maintain a house. The USDA Rural Development, through the Rural Rental Housing (RRH) program, provides assistance to rural communities in meeting the needs of adequate, safe and affordable housing.

Since the beginning of the RRH program in Missouri in the late 1960’s, Rural Development (formerly Farmers Home Administration) has financed over 900 rental projects in 113 of the 114 Missouri counties. Through the hard work of dedicated citizens that volunteered their time working through a non-profit corporation, such as Butler Rural Housing Corporation, this federal program has benefited many rural communities.

For those interested in rental projects funded by USDA Rural Development in a particular county, you can access information by visiting http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/mo/mfhpage.htm and follow the instructions. The name of the complex, type of apartments (elderly or family), number of apartment units and the contact person are available online.

Obituary - Glenn Cummings

Cecil Glenn Cummings passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.
Glenn was the youngest child of Hiram and Gertie Cummings.  Four brothers and two sisters, as well as one grandson and one great-grandson preceded him in death.
Glenn married Ruby McQuinn on June 23, 1943 in Nevada, Mo.  They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in June of this year.  A small celebration was held with some family and lots of hospital employees; one employee asked him to dance.
Glenn served in the U.S. Navy in the signal corps. He participated in many dangerous missions and was elated that he graduated from the signal corps school, because so many did not. It should be noted that Glenn served both the Eastern and Western fronts of World War II.  After his service, Glenn and Ruby returned to the farm life that he had known and loved.  After farming a few years they moved into Butler, where Glenn became an insurance agent for the Farm Bureau.  Because his first love was being involved in farming, he began delivering lime and fertilizer throughout Bates County, and continued this to within a year of his death.  Glenn loved the land, his customers, and his truck.
To sum up Glenn’s life there is one sentence that says it all:  “Love of God, family, farm and country!” Glenn was a very quiet person and you had to push to get a lot of conversation.  His wit was very uncanny and he always had pet names for special people he cared about.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Butler, as well as the Butler American Legion.  He also belonged to a very special Pitch group, which he enjoyed attending weekly.
Glenn is survived by his wife Ruby of Butler; daughter Cheryl and husband Bill Gepford of Marco Island, Fla.; daughter Carol Cummings of Butler; grandchildren Brett (Gina) Lord; Stacy (Doug) Fields; Shannon (Misti) Gepford; Karmin (Scott) Ricker; Cherilyn (Aaron) Widhalm; great-grandchildren Sara, Ryan, Kylie, Kassity, Alyxandra, Madalyn, Ryenne, Taylor, Hailee, Trey, and Abygail.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660) 679-0009, with Shannon Gepford presiding. No visitation.  Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.  Memorial contributions in memory of Glenn are suggested to Happy Hill Church of God, or Bates County Home Health, in care of the funeral home.  Written messages and memories may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Skies turn sunny for Elk's car show

Muscle and comfort side by side
While brief rains may have kept a few at bay, proud owners of everything from t-buckets to bracket racers came to show their rides at the annual Bates County Elks Car show.

There were around 25 cars and upwards of 10 motorcycles on display on the front lawn of the Elks Lodge. Around 2 p.m., those present gathered for the flag ceremony, which explained the progression of the appearance of the American flag from inception to present day.

Another car show is in the works for next year-hopefully the weather will be a little more cooperative...
All kinds of cars and colors

A super fast '62...
