4-H celebrates achievement

Bates County 4-H Leaders and Members were honored at the annual Recognition Celebration held Sunday afternoon, November 6, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Butler. Alan J. Mundey, 4-H Youth Specialist, presided over the event, the focus of which was the presentation of awards for 4-H achievement this past year.

In recognition of National 4-H Week, Rachel Brown announced that window display awards were given to the Summit Go Getters 4-H club for first place, the Hudson Hustlers 4-H club for second place, and the County Line 4-H club for third place. Alan Mundey recognized those leaders with milestone years. Jerry Ferguson, John and Susan Goddard, and Mike and Monica Mackeprang received their 15 year pins. Ralph Franklin’s 15 year pin was previously presented to his family. Wesley Merritt was honored for his 25 years of volunteer service. Brenda Doody, Bates County Extension Office Manager, recognized all club leaders and presented pins to those for specific number of years they had served as volunteer leaders. Doody presented Community Service Awards to Ballard 4-H (green seal), Hudson Hustlers 4-H (silver seal), Summit Go Getters 4-H (gold seal), and County Line 4-H (purple seal). Marsha Casey was honored as Outstanding Project Leader and Sherry Warfield and Deanna Bradley shared the Outstanding Club Leader award. Curtis W. Long, M.D., of Butler was recognized with the Friend of 4-H Award for his generosity shown toward Bates County 4-H’ers.

Local artist gains attention of the U.S. Postal Service

Rebekah Nastav

Some are gifted with the knack and Rebekah Nastav of rural Amoret certainly has that gift- to the extent that her artwork is now being featured on U.S. stamps, namely the Junior Duck Stamp (a redhead duck, shown below).

It's no easy task to get the attention of those who judge the artwork- but her perseverance has certainly paid off. An equally striking painting of a Blue Winged Teal won 6th place for Nastav as her creations were considered for the U.S Fish & Wildlife conservation stamps program.

In her own words, Rebekah reveals more about her humble journey:

Nastav's 6th place entry, a Blue
Winged Teal
I have been painting and drawing since I was a toddler. My interest has always been in animals. I started taking my art seriously and competitively at the age of 13, when I won a first place ribbon for my age category in the 2004 Missouri Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest, and again a first place ribbon in 2005. You may recall that when I was 15, I entered the same contest again for the third time. My entry, titled "Morning Swim," featuring a single Redhead drake swimming in the morning light, won Best Of Show for the state of Missouri. My entry then went on to compete with the other 49 states, and was finally selected as the first place winner of the national 2006 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. I entered the following two years and won third place both times. In 2009 after I graduated high school (which, by the way, I was homeschooled), I was old enough to enter the Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Since the competition is much higher in quality as well as quantity, my entry (a single wood duck drake) did not get through the first round of judging. The following year was the same with my entry featuring a northern shoveler.

More information regarding Oklahoma earthquake...

The 4.7 and 5.6 earthquakes that rocked central Oklahoma this weekend have certainly been a hot topic of discussion, as many claim claim the ground waves were felt locally.

Earthquakes are not unusual in Oklahoma, but they often are too small to be felt. From 1972-2008 about 2-6 earthquakes a year were recorded by the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. In 2008, earthquake activity began to increase, with over a dozen earthquakes recorded that year. In 2009 the rate continued to climb, with nearly 50 quakes recorded--many big enough to be felt. The earthquakes from 1973-2007 were scattered broadly across the east-central part of the state.

More information about the Oklahoma quakes can be found here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/usb0006klz.php#summary
