Honoring Our Veterans

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

With the State of the State Address and the presentation of the governor’s budget, the topic of funding for Missouri’s veterans has been brought to the forefront. The idea of a dedicated source of funding for veterans, our state’s heroes, is certainly appealing, and there has been legislation filed this year in both chambers that would attempt to fill that role.

In the Senate, a bill has been filed, SB 499, which would create an additional $1 fee per entry on an excursion gambling boat. Currently, there is a $2 fee, generally absorbed and paid for by the gambling boat licensee. This act would increase that total to $3 per person for gaming floor entry. The potential revenue from this legislation is $50 million per year. However, similar legislation was filed in 2011 and did not pass. I am still supportive of finding one or more dedicated funding sources.

February is American Heart Month

Courtesy of Tammy Roberts, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. In 2002, President Bush proclaimed February American Heart Month. It is during this month that we should review the risk factors for heart disease, the warning signs of a heart attack and check our personal habits to assure we are doing everything possible to keep our hearts healthy.

There are risk factors for heart disease that we have no control over such as age or family history of heart disease. There are more risk factors for heart disease that you can control. They include: lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity, too much alcohol intake and cigarette smoking. High blood cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. As cholesterol rises, so does the risk for heart disease. Blood cholesterol can be controlled with a combination of diet, exercise and medication.

Latest 'experiment' ends with very positive results...

A few months back we fully integrated our Heartland Trader classifieds into the Bates County Live home page and found a significant increase in the number of views each ad got per month. Just two weeks ago, we took the whole thing one step further and made our presence known on Craigslist- in those two weeks we have again seen the number of ad views nearly double again...

There's a few of us here at Bates County Live that like to stay up late thinking about how to better serve our advertisers and we are hoping to have a few more ideas implemented to promote our classified ad program in the very near future:

1. Classified ads will appear on our Facebook page.
2. Search engine optimization will 'spill' classifieds onto the internet to be found by mostly local users.
3. We are working on a method for readers to 'subscribe' to certain types of ads (local sales, lunch deals, specials, etc.) and receive those ads by Twitter, email and possibly by text messages.

Note that all classified ads are already visible on the Heartland Trader.com web site, our mirror site Bates County Live.net and we have many readers who get classifieds by email and RSS feeds...

So what's this mean to you? Mega bang for your buck! Heartland Trader classifieds start at just $1 and can be placed today by credit or debit card. Remember that classified ads work GREAT for businesses and individuals alike. To place your ad today, click here. For more info on all of our advertising options click here. And thanks in advance for your business!

FEMA Funds Second Monolithic Dome Tornado Shelter for Missouri School

Editor's note- The Joplin disaster last year has further prompted the need to make to make safer structures in our area, especially those where many people gather and may not have access to early warning bulletins. Many local schools are participating in the Archie tournament this week and everyone is invited to go to the games and see this amazing structure. Our thanks to Carol Lanham for sharing this story with us:

Archie R-V School District is hosting its first basketball tournament this week in its new gymnasium, a steel-reinforced, concrete Monolithic Dome that will double as a community disaster shelter.

The building was funded in part by a $1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The federal agency helped pay for the building because Monolithic Domes meet the agency’s standards for near-absolute protection from tornadoes. The structure is designed to withstand an F5 tornado, and can accommodate a large number of people in case of severe weather.
