Some foods cause choking risk in young children

From Tammy Roberts, Health and Nutrition Specialist robertstt@missouri.edu

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics choking on food causes the death of a child every five days in the United States. It is important to know who is most at risk and which foods to avoid.

Children that are younger than four years of age or children with chewing or swallowing problems are the ones most at risk for choking. Children under the age of four are new at using their molars. They may bite off a piece of food with their incisors and forget to use, or underuse, their molars.

“Children often get in a hurry to eat and swallow food before it is completely chewed. There are some shapes that you need to watch closely” said Tammy Roberts, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

James Journey files for re-election

On February 27, 2012, I, James K. Journey, filed for re-election as Judge of the 27th Judicial Circuit, serving Henry, Bates and St. Clair Counties. I have had the privilege of presiding over a wide variety of interesting and challenging matters during this, my initial term in office. I have learned much and I could not have imagined prior to taking office how personally rewarding my job is. When I began my judicial career, my goal was to serve all persons who come before the court with justice, fairness and civility. I’ve made that goal a constant priority and I will continue to do so. My prior thirty years of experience in law as an attorney, representing clients in the circuit and the state of Missouri has been an invaluable asset to me as a judge. I appreciate the importance and impact the decisions I am asked to make have on the lives of those coming before the Court. I have sought the use of innovative and realistic approaches to solving problems such as bringing adult treatment courts into the circuit. I look forward to continued service.

I have been a life long resident of Henry County and attended Central Missouri State University, now UCM, and the University of Missouri School of Law. I was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1976, and practiced law throughout the circuit and the State of Missouri until taking the bench. My wife, Rachelle, our three children and I reside in Clinton, and attend the First Baptist Church of Clinton.

A Break in Capitol Action

From the Desk of Senator David Pearce

One of the things I look forward to during the General Assembly’s mid-session recess is the chance to spend time in the district, talking with people and listening to their opinions regarding current legislation. During the hectic weeks of session in Jefferson City, there is not always time to do that. I have been fortunate to be able to visit a number of organizations and events in these brief days around the 31st Senatorial District, including schools and students, chambers of commerce, and local governments.

Commuters will need to find an alternate route...

Route 18/Miami Creek Bridge in Merwin Set for Replacement Beginning March 26

Bates County -- Route 18 at Miami Creek in Merwin is scheduled to CLOSE Monday, March 26, to allow contractor crews to replace the bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Route 18 will remain closed at the bridge until late April or early May. Weather and/or construction delays could alter the dates the road is closed and reopened.

The old bridge is being replaced as part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.

From the east, an alternate route can be to take the gravel road 1 mile east of Merwin north one mile and back west- that will put you on 18 highway one mile north of Merwin. Other routes can be found by taking the gravel road off the second curve east of Merwin- all roads will take you west to Y highway north of Amsterdam.

We'll keep you updated as construction on the bridge progresses.
