Car into guardrail sends one to hospital

Around 4:50 p.m. yesterday a man and woman from Pierce City Mo. were involved in a single car accident on 71 highway at the Passaic exit. According to the report filed by MSHP Trooper G.J. Jenner, the southbound Dodge driven by Crista M. Witt, 40, traveled off the left side and the roadway and struck a guardrail, which resulted in moderate injuries to passenger Dean E. Burden, 42.

Burden, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Trooper Jenner was assisted at the scene by the Bates County Sheriff's Department and the Adrian Fire Department first responders.

Renown author to appear at Bates County Museum

Darryl W. Levings
The Bates County Museum presents: Darryl W. Levings, Editor at The Kansas City Star

The Museum will host another outstanding program on Saturday, September 15th at 10:00 am in Robertson Hall. Kansas City Star Editor, Darryl Levings, will discuss his book, Saddle the Pale Horse, which was published by Kansas City Star Books. A free will offering lunch will be served following the program.

“Based on real characters and events, Saddle the Pale Horse weaves together the stories of a land where treachery ruled and blood ran and cruelty had no bounds. This was Missouri in 1864: Teenaged bushwhackers rode and killed with Jesse James and Quantrill and Bloody Bill, and a uniform was no guarantee of a soldier’s allegiance. This richly detailed historical novel follows the Confederate invasion from the day that an aging general’s ragtag army crossed the border from Arkansas. It continues through the death and destruction wrought by pitched battle and by guerrilla raid, and culminates in the massive clashes of arms at Westport and Mine Creek.”

“Darryl W. Levings, an editor at The Kansas City Star for three decades, has led several history projects for the newspaper. He created a series on national landmarks in the region, edited two collections of World War II commemorative stories, and directed a month of daily reports from the Oregon Trail during its sesquicentennial. Most recently, he directed and wrote for The Star’s recent Civil War 150 series.”

Mr. Levings’ books will be available for purchase and signing. The Museum is honored to present this outstanding free program and invites the public to attend. This is one more opportunity to be both entertained and educated. Call the Museum for further information. 660-679-0134.

Many 'drop in' for Aviation Day 2012

A special treat was seeing and hearing a vintage
Cessna 190 with radial engine roaring skyward
The consensus was FINALLY there was good weather for the annual Aviation Day festivities at the Butler Memorial Airport. In fact, moderate temps and low humidity made for perfect conditions as aircraft of all types were on display including a couple of Ercoupes, several Bonanza's, an Aztec or two, plenty of Piper's, a somewhat rare Cessna 190 (at left), a bright green Bellanca, sport models and more- just about every popular make of plane was represented today.

Due to a mechanical issue, Johnny Rowlands did not make an appearance, however there is talk that he will be back in November to make good on the helicopter rides as promised.

Along with lunch and live music by Irene Holt, Skydive Kansas City performed a group jump from 15,000 feet with several landing on the grass alongside the spectators.

There were plenty of kit planes including this sport model that drew
a lot of attention from young and old alike

Last minute instructions for Skydive KC members. Unfortunately,
the circle maneuver holding hands was not performed possibly
due to high winds aloft.
The workings of a gyrocopter are being discussed. Shortly
after there was a fantastic display of the agility of the
machine and piloting skills combined
A brightly colored chute brings another jumper back for a safe
landing within mere feet of spectators
.
